Show Cm Grapplers battle for j region supremacy ' 1 i : . 1 I ? Bj G. BRETT HART J Sports Editor BOUNTIFUL What can really be said about wrestling? To those who understand and love the sport, wrestling is the ultimate test of wills, skills and training. To those who don't understand or like the sport, wrestling consists of little more than a couple of sweaty behemoths rolling around on a mat Ultimately, however, a match comes down to two individuals who enter the ring with only the sum total of their desires and preparation. Ultimately it's man against man, one on one. Regardless of your attitude at-titude toward wrestling, that is the one indisputable truth about the sport. This week, Bountiful and Viewmont high schools hosted the Region 6 and 1 wrestling tournaments Wednesday and Thursday, respectively, t: in order to establish team supremacy and allow each individual wrestler the opportunity to try his mettle against the region's top athletes and qualify for next week's state tournament. f-- Things went pretty much as expected in both tournaments. Tooele dominated the Region 6 tourney out-distancing second-place Murray by 76 points and boasting five region champions. West finished in third with 95. fe- As for host Bountiful and cross-town rival Woods Cross, tournament b team standings turned out to be a disappointment The 'Cats finished t seventh, the Braves, eighth. Bountiful wrestler Scott Olsen shows Murray opponent Brad Davis the proper way to use a "cross face." Olsen came from behind to beat Davis 5-3 in sudden deatli overtime and win the 1 30-pound region title. Olsen was named outstanding tournament wrestler in the lower weight division. I Olsen battled his way back from a third place seed to claim the 130- ;p I pound title. In a heart-stopping match, Olsen came from behind to tie t? Brad Davis of Murray 3-3 with a last second takedown in regulation and i; I went on to beat Davis 5-3 in sudden death overtime. Olsen was named I outstanding tournament wrestler in the lower weights. I In the 152-pound title match, Jones overcame West's stubborn Chris I Brandon 4-2 to become region champ. Jones is currently ranked second I in the state. I The Wildcats had three of their top grapplers in title matches. Jason : 1 Widdison lost a disappointing overtime bout for the 112-pound title i with Tooele's Nick LeonelU. Leonelli, 22-2 on the season, defeated I Widdison 4-2 in OT. f, j Wildcat Jason Henrie lost to Tory Park of Murray, 17-3, and Woods I Cross' Brian Erickson battled Murray's Damon Ware for the 1 89-pound 7 I region title. Ware dominated the talented Wildcat grappler 15-4. i I Clearfield manhandled its league opponents claiming the Region 1, I team title with 218 points. Like Tooele, the Falcons also claimed five I individual region titles. B i I The Layton Lancer finished second with 161, followed by Viewmont Ef with 114.5. The Darts ended in sixth with 59.5. ' I Defending region champion Viewmont sent four of its most talented into region title bouts. Unfortunately for the Vikes, none prevailed. The result - the Vikes did not repeat as region champions for the first time in five years. At 125, Neil Randall dropped a disappointing match to Jeff Burton of Layton, 10-3. Max Freestone lost his title match to another Layton grappler, Mike Cannon 4-9. Clearfield's Rick Mawyer outlasted Steve Bender, and top-ranked Falcon wrestler John Wojciechowski edged second se-cond ranked Lee Mahlstede 8-6. Mahlstede, down by two with only seconds left, came inches away from reversing Wojciechowski aid sending the match into overtime, but the referees ruled that Mahlstede did not establish control before the buzzer sounded. South Davis only Region 1 champion was 130-pound Jason Robinson Robin-son of Davis. Robinson claimed region title honors last year at 125 and was unstoppable at 130, pinning Weber's Daniel Trujillo in the second round. Dart grappler Kohn Cullimore was Davis' only other wrestler to compete in a title bout. Clearfield's James Ragan pinned the Davis junior ju-nior in the second. To qualify for state, wrestlers had to place in the top four at region.
