Show Semifinalists heat up January Thaw By G.BRETT HART Sports Editor WOODS CROSS Competitors in Towne and Country's "January Thaw" racquetball tournament finals will clash today at 2 p.m. Final-round athletes have been whittled from over 100 entrants in the Woods Cross-based tourney which began Tuesday. Though Friday night's semifinal results were not available at press time, here's a recap of the semifinal competitors and matchups, the winners of which will determine Saturday afternoon competition. In the Men's open division, Trevor Sud weeks faced Rick Strout. The winner will take on the victor of the Tom Sherman, Steve Hack duel. Both matches were played Friday evening. The finals are scheduled for today at 2 p.m. The men's A level semifinals place Marionne Walsh against Hal Labelle. The winner of the LaBelle, Walsh matchup will face the winner of the Randy Darrohn, Grant Needham game. Men's A finals are also scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday's men's B level semifinals found Dave Brown matched with Scott Preston and Collins Max field taking on Bountiful' s Gary Gatherum. The winners face off today at 2. In men's C competition, James Thompson faced Steve Clark and Jack Hill dueled Rick LaBelle. Last night's winners will compete today to-day at 2 for the men's C title. Towne and Country professional Rick Strout will face Time Storey today at 2 for the men's 35-40 division title. In round robin competition going into Friday's matches, Hal LaBelle led the 45-50 men's bracket, Michael Shaefer held the lead in the men's 30 and older and John Coppin led the men's D division. In the women's round robin category, C and D level, combined 1 competition was deadlocked between Cindy Jones and Joanne I Davenport. I The Women's open A bracket was slated to begin Friday evening, j the results of which were not available at press time. Women's open I A competition is also held on a round robin basis. I The January Thaw tourney marks the second-to-last American I Amateur Racquetball Association-sanctioned tourney preceding j March's Utah State Singles Championships. 1 Racquetball season begins in September and finishes in August I The Ogden Athletic Club will host the final pre-singles champion- I ship tourney Feb. 20-23 followed by the championships March 6-9 at j the Sports Mall in Murray. j The American Collegiate Racquetball Association will host the I Collegiate Regionals at BYU March 1-2 and the AARA Western Regionals will be held April 17-20 at the Sports Mall.
