Show Soccer teams head for state By G.BRETT HART B OUNTIFUL-The regular, prep girls' soccer season finished up Wednesday sending three out of four South Davis high school teams into the state tournament. VIEWMONT The Vikings ended region play Wednesday on two important notes. First, Viewmont shut out Region One's second place finisher, the Weber High Warriors, 2-0 in Bountiful. Boun-tiful. Second, the Vikes locked up 4 fourth place honors and a state tournament appearance. Viewmont will travel to Hillcrest Monday in first round action. Amber Muna scored Viewmont's first goal against Weber ten minutes into the second half. The Vikings held the Warriors scoreless throughout the second half and put the icing on the cake when sweeper Heidi Buttars lobbed a shot from 50 feet out that bounced over Weber's goalie and into the net with less than five minutes left in the game. The win was an important morale booster for the Vikings who struggled Oct. 8 losing to Clearfield 3-1. It will take morale and a lot more to beat Hillcrest which locked up the Region Three title last week-Viking week-Viking coach Richard Cook said, "We haven't seen Hillcrest play, but I know one thing for sure, the state record is 0-0; it's anybody's ball game." DAVIS Davis High was bumped out of the state tournament placing fifth in Region One competition. Both 4A and 3A tournaments feature the top four teams from each region in the state. i Davis Dart Coach John Miller felt that her girls ended the season on a positive note playing hard until the final whistle Wednesday against Roy. The Darts lost to the Royals 2-1. Senior Laura Beeson scored the Dans' only goal. "I was disappointed disap-pointed that we didn't make it to state, but we made great progress and ended the season on an upswing. upsw-ing. During the first half of the season we went 1-5," said Miller. "We finished the second half of the season 4-2." The Darts lost to Weber High Monday 3-0 in Pleasant View. In spite of ' a determined defensive effort, Davis couldn't shut down the Warrior scoring machine. Miller looks forward to the return of some of her powerhouse players next year including juniors Sandra Thorson, Eden Edwards and Ja-Quoy Ja-Quoy Castelli. Miller, who has coached little league girls soccer for a number of years, will have the opportunity to coach some of her former players as entering sophomores next year which will strengthen the Darts significantly. We had our ups and downs this season said Miller. "But overall, we grew in character. WOODS CROSS The Wildcats have tied for a Region Six first place with rival Judge. When given the option of playing off for first place, Woods Cross Coach Kevin Rigby prefers the coin toss. "It doesn't matter whether we're seeded first or second going into the tournament I don't care who we play. Eventually we'll have to play Ogden or Ben Lomand, and I don't see any difference. They're both really good,' said Rigby. A coin toss will determine whether or not the 'Cats are seeded first or second in the 3A tournament which means their first game will be against a third or fourth place team from Region Five. "When you get to state, you absolutely ab-solutely have to expect the best teams. We're not afraid of anybody," added Rigby. "The state tournament is unpredictable. un-predictable. On a good day, anybody can beat anybody. ' The Wildcats will play their first tournament match on Wednesday. Rigby said he hasn't been notified yet as to the outcome of the toss or which team Woods Cross will face first. The 'Cats finished the season beating Bountiful 7-0 Monday and beating West by forfeit on Wednesday. Wednes-day. Pam Franklin led Wildcat scoring against the Braves with four goals. BOUNTIFUL The Braves also ended the season in a tie. Bountiful tied with Jordan for third place in Region Six, and a coin toss will decide whether they enter the tournament seeded third or fourth. ' In any event, Bountiful will face either Ogden or Ben Lomand in the state tournament's first round which will pose a formidable task for the Braves. The results of the coin toss seeding the Braves have not yet been announced. The Braves ended the season losing to Woods Cross and beating Tooele by forfeit as the Buffaloes do not feature a girls soccer team. |
