Show Literature is troubling Dear Editor: Recent campaign literature which has been distributed for Don S. Redd, Republican candidate for the Utah Senate, has me concerned. Mr. Redd states that there should be "conduct requirements as a condition con-dition to a public supported education." edu-cation." The words, "as a condition," condi-tion," imply that Mr. Redd believes that students should be dismissed if their conduct does not meet requirements. re-quirements. While this may sound good at first look, remember that students who are denied an education will be unskilled and undereducated. They will almost surely increase the welfare rolls in the future. At worst it will mean the need for more prisons. The cost of the new Gunnison Gun-nison prison was recently reported at $60,000 per bed. A far more sensible approach is the recent Davis School District Citizenship Policy which results in appropriate consequences of citizenship classes andor community communi-ty service for "U's" in citizenship. It appears to me that Mr. Redd has unreasonable, costly, and frankly, frank-ly, unworkable solutions for the problems of education. Davis County Coun-ty needs to re-elect a proven and respected leader, and that person is Haven Barlow! John C. Allen Bountiful |
