Davis School District is sponsor-: sponsor-: ing a series of workshops on " classical music experiences for children. The workshops are ; designed to help PTA volunteers ? with ideas and techniques for ; presenting the classical music selec-; selec-; tions for children which have been specified in the state guide for each grade level. These classical music workshops will be taught by Shauna : Srurzenegger and Pam Christy, r local directors of the Up With Kids Children's Theatre Company. Up With Kids is a performing arts cur- riculum which is based on the : works of the Great Masters of .; music, dance, literature, art and f poetry. Up With Kids directors are I well-trained and experienced in v providing children with a broad variety of performing arts learning L activities which teach them about i their cultural heritage. Up With Kids follows a tradition of com-f com-f munity service. Shauna and Pam i are excited to be able to share these I "tried and true" techniques for ' teaching children how much fun and excitement they can receive " from classical music. The first graders at Farmington Elementary were treated to an expe-, expe-, pence with the classical composi-t composi-t tion "Danse Macabre," by Camille i Saint-Saens, at Halloween time last ( year, presented by Shauna 5 Srurzenegger. During classroom presentations, the children were i taught to recognize three musical themes in the composition: the smooth, gliding ghost theme; the bouncy, rattling skeleton theme; and the swooping witch theme. Afterward the three first grade classes met in the school gymnasium, gym-nasium, where Shauna directed them in a riotous creative movement move-ment experience to the music. The children enjoyed it so much that it was repeated three times, so that each class could have the opportunity opportuni-ty to play each of the three parts. Because the teachers and students enjoyed this experience with classical music so much, they invited Shauna to come back in the spring. This time Shauna brought her Roland W30 synthesized keyboard and taught the children to recognize the sounds of the various instruments that play the classical composition, "Morning Mood," by Edvard Grieg. Shauna and the children assigned a different symbol sym-bol of spring to each of the instruments: in-struments: the flute became butterflies, but-terflies, the oboe was the rising sun, the bassoon was a lazy duck swimming swim-ming around on a pond, and the tympanies were tall, majestic pine trees, etc. When they met in the gymnasium this time, the children were allowed to choose which part they would like to act out. Again, Shauna directed them through the performance perfor-mance several times, so that the children could act out several parts, and it was a wonderful experience. Shauna Sturzenegger loves children so much that it is a fun experience ex-perience for her to come to the classrooms and share her love of classical music with the children. But in order to be able to bring this experience to greater numbers of school children in Davis District, Jan Asper, Davis District's music specialist, asked Shauna if she would meet with PTA volunteers this year, and teach them how to teach the children about classical music, so that each school could have its own classical music specialist visiting the classrooms and spreading this love of classical music everywhere they go. Shauna and Jan became very excited about the idea, and the planning for the workshops began. The classical music workshops will take place at the Bountiful Library auditorium, 725 South Main Street, Bountiful, on consecutive con-secutive Wednesdays from Sept. 26 through Nov. 14, (except Halloween), Hallo-ween), from 12:30-2 p.m. On Sept. 26, Shauna and Pam will teach the kindergarten selections: selec-tions: "Carnival of the Animals," "The Wild Horseman," "The Happy Fanner," and the "Flight of the Bumblebee." On Oct. 3, they will present the first grade selections: the march from the "Love for Three Oranges," Or-anges," "Surprise Symphony," and the "Nutcracker Suite." Second grade selections taught on Oct. 10 include: the "Mother Goose Suite," the "Grand Canyon |
