Those interested in taking advantage of the tax credit must install in-stall a qualified, functioning energy system by December 31, and have it certified by the Utah Energy Office. Home owners may claim an income in-come tax credit equal to 25 percent of the residential energy system's cost, including installation. Total amount of the tax credit may not exceed $1,500. Businesses are entitled to a tax credit equal to 10 percent of the commercial energy system's cost, including installation, against any income tax or franchise tax liability. Total tax credit may not exceed $25,000. Active and passive solar thermal, photovoltaic, wind, biomass and hydropower energy systems are eligible eli-gible for the tax credit. Active solar thermal systems collect col-lect and convert solar energy into thermal or mechanical energy. They include water heating, space heating or cooling. Passive solar systems utilize the structure of a building and its south-facing south-facing windows to collect, store and distribute heat from the sun. They include trombe walls and direct gain systems.
