Show Editorial Comment Do your duty. . . if only for xthe principle of it' ,t x A Looking at the roster of candidates can-didates for the Sept 11 Primary Election in Davis County, one might be tempted to stay away from the voting booths since many of the races involve only one party, or even offer no challenger at all. But be wary of thinking that because of the lack of diversity your vote doesn't matter. Not only is voting a democratic privilege to be cherished and exercised at every opportunity, but it is also a big help to the candidates to show them your support. We often think that so-and-so is sure to win as the incumbent, or that someone else hasn't got a chance, so why waste a trip to the polls. But keep in mind these candidates work long and hard and spend a great deal of money on their campaigns. Not only do they deserve to know how much support they have (whether they win or lose), but it also serves as a barometer for those who don't win to know if they have enough support to try again next time. So let's not get into the habit of complacency, even though this is not a major election. Why not take an hour and go listen to the candidates can-didates speak-even call them on the phone if you'd like some personal per-sonal time to talk with them. And then go vote, even if both candidates are from the same party. They're still individuals with varying vary-ing viewpoints and diverse qualifications for public office. Let's do our duty and vote, either because we care about the candidates, can-didates, or because it's our right and we appreciate it! |
