Presidency changes hands in reading club BOUNTIFUL--Dr. Deon Stevens, principal of Washington Elementary School, has just completed com-pleted a term as president of the Davis County International Reading Association. Stevens is now training the president-elect, Irene R. Janes, a resource teacher at Viewmont High School. Her term of office will start July 1,1990. Stevens and Janes share common goals to further the overall improvement im-provement of reading programs among educators in Davis School District. Members of the reading association associa-tion include 150 elementary and secondary educators, some administrators admin-istrators and others interested in reading improvement. Janes stated her primary goal will be to increase membership in the organization by offering quality speakers who can impart valuable reading information to all members. She also hopes to offer worthwhile service projects to schools and the community. A remedial resource teacher for the past six years, Janes deals primarily with mildly handicapped students. Her earlier experience was with elementary students. Janes also works with diagnosing reading problems. She reports that many times a student is referred for low grades that are directly related to a reading problem. "I enjoy testing students to find the area of reading problems, but the real challenge is developing programs with parents and students that will improve overall reading ability," she said. Parents and teachers have a shared task to teach and promote reading, Janes believes. She cautions cau-tions parents about the amount of time spent with other activities that detract from home time set aside to practice reading. "You just won't get very far in this fast paced life without good reading skills," Janes stated. |
