Show Disabled being recognized I By JANIS STUART I Clipper Correspondent I The rights of people with I disabilities are finally being recog- I nized. I New laws have been passed, such I as the Americans with Disabilities I Act, recognition is being gained I through such events as the Special I Olympics, and educational achiev- I ements are being made through I special education rulings. I Advocating for these rights are I the Legal Center for People with I Disabilities, Utah's Governor's I Council for People with I Disabilities, and the University Af- I filiated Program (UAP). I In recognition of the need to de- I velop effective consumer participa- I tion and leadership by individuals I with disabilities, these agencies are I seeking the names of consumers or I their designated representatives to I participate in a training program to I increase their effectiveness in plan- J ning, evaluating and promoting ser- h vices for people with disabilities. A current search is being conducted con-ducted for ten potential board members to be identified. These individuals in-dividuals will receive free training as well as hands-on experience at council meetings. This is a unique opportunity for individuals with disabilities to learn how to become effective in expressing express-ing and implementing their needs. The proposed training will include: in-clude: Consumer orientation to the overall field of human services, Earning the structure of state and private agencies, understanding the legislative and legal process Developing techniques for influencing influen-cing legislation and policy, "Participating "Par-ticipating in and conducting meetings, Assertiveness, and Sources of information.
