Show Political hiiinks, election promises fill the air Tis the season for political hi-jinks hi-jinks and election promises. Below are some of the highs and lows of the election season. Cyclops by Bryan Gray barely judging opponent Stewart Hanson. SILLIEST COMMENT-Republican COMMENT-Republican gubernatorial candidate Lawrence Kauffman's statement that he would not attend the party's state convention. "There are too many minorities in Ogden," said Kauffman. "My life and the lives of my supporters would be in jeopardy." WORST POLITICAL ISSUE-Utah ISSUE-Utah Right to Life criticism of anti-abortion anti-abortion candidate Joe Cannon for his hiring of a pro-choice press relations rela-tions director. When Right to Life said the hiring was a "conflict of interest," in-terest," Cannon calmly said, "It's wrong to expect everyone to have identical views. This whole thing would be funny if it weren't so real" DUMBEST COMMENT BY A DEMOCRAT-Doug Anderson s "victory" comment after he barely got 30 percent of the state delegate votes. "This sends a message that people want change," said Anderson. Ander-son. (Gee, if I got beat by more than 2-1 margin, I'd interpret the message a bit differently,) DUMBEST COMMENT BY A REPUB LIC AN First District Congressman Con-gressman Jim Hansen's statement that "the worst thing that could possibly happen in my life is having Wayne Owens come back as a U.S. Senator." (Even worse, Jim, than terminal cancer, the death of a child, the closure of HAFB?) UGLIEST POLITICAL BILLBOARDS-Democrat Ron Holt's bland signage which fails to grab the motorist's eye. Both candidates, say Republicans, are likable and competent. BEST CHANCE FOR A DEMOCRATIC VICTORY-If Richard Eyre gains the GOP nomination, nomi-nation, he'll polarize the voters and allow the Democrats to control the statehouse. Republican legislators have already told me they'd vote for a Democrat over Eyre, and Democrat Pat Shea told state delegates, dele-gates, "I will not wilt the first time Richard Eyre quotes from one of his self-serving books. ' ' WORST RACE IN DAVIS COUNTY-Don Bush and Vernon Borgeson, battling for the Utah House in the Clearfield area. Said a Bountiful Republican, "That's the race between the living dead." MOST INTERESTING RACE--District 13 in Davis County where Rep. Gayle Voight is seeking reelection. Voight has been very vocal in his support of pari-mutuel horse betting, but is running in a predominantly LDS area. WORST ELECTION DROPOUT-School district member Ray Briscoe's decision to bow out of the race in the Woods Cross area. Briscoe was always direct and quotable as shown in his humorous comment to a black person per-son who complained that he couldn't get served at Snelgrove's Ice Cream parlor. Said Briscoe: "That's not discrimination. Heck, at Snelgrove's they don't serve anyone. They just hire elderly Relief Society women who don't have any idea how to run a business." busi-ness." EASIEST REPUBLICAN VIC-TORY-Kim Burn Ingham, a shoo-in shoo-in for reelection in District 19. MOST H U MOKU U 5 LIN Jb S peaking at the Davis County Democratic Convention in Farming Farm-ing ton, party chairman Peter Billings Bill-ings ribbed Vice President Dan Quayle for criticizing Murphy Brown's morality. Said Billings, "The next thing Quayle will do is attack Snow White for living with seven men." WORST POLL PREDICTION Democratic gubernatorial candidate Pat Shea's prediction that he had a 2-1 to 3-1 lead in delegate votes. One week later, however, Shea earned only 52 percent of the votes, |
