Show By JANIS STUART Staff Writer "O With the discovery of the secret of the Ephraim Homestead Bed and Breakfast, comes a new vista of summer vacations in Utah. Literally within minutes of the cozy granary and 19th century Victorian Vic-torian home, is a world of discovery. Beginning in Ephraim, a visitor can explore the heritage of Utah through the old homes dotting the area. Many are being restored and each edifice has held the memories of families of bygone years. vhe Scandinavian Festival is held Jphraim each May with a Little Denmark Supper to honor citizens who have contributed to the area's heritage. Food booths offer a traditional tradi-tional menu, and craft booths provide pro-vide wares from flowered headbands head-bands to dancing horses created by old world craftsmen. Scandinavian entertainment features folk dance groups, puppeteers, pup-peteers, artists, story-tellers and bands. The festival each year brings residents and visitors an authentic smorgasbord that rivals the finest gourmet cooking. Just north of Ephraim is Mt. Pleasant, where the annual Horseshoe Mountain Festival is held. Events like the performance of Blackhawks, a re-enactment of an original production leading to the signing of the Blackhawk Indian Treaty, is performed. The festival includes a turkey barbecue supper, a Little Miss Horseshoe Pageant, and an old-fashioned outdoor dance at Heritage Park. Variety is the key word to vacationing vaca-tioning in central Utah. Fishing is handy in many of the nearby lakes. The San pitch River winds through the county and mountain lakes and streams can be reached in about a half-hour's drive from Fairview. A fishing paradise is completed with the availability of Huntington North Reservoir, Scofield Reservoir, Palisade Lake and Bench's Pond. Scenic bicycle trails offer unique views along the Mil burn Loop and the Shellyville Trail. Natives describe the loops as "Picturesque journeys into an earlier era, affording affor-ding cyclists an opportunity to view both native plant and animal life." Both loops axe easy rides with most of the travel on pavement and no more than a 400-foot change in elevation. The second annual President's Day Turkey Putt golf tournament will be held this year at Palisade Golf Course. The event is hosted by Snow College and is a mixture of creative golf shots and chances to win exceptional prizes, including a new Chevrolet. A visit to central Utah would not be complete without a visit to the Fairview Museum. Hidden in this out-of-the-way museum is a treasure chest of history. Sculptures by Utah's nationally famous artist, Arvad T. Fairbanks, adorn the halls. Fairbanks' sculpture of Peter and Celestia Peterson prompted the establishment es-tablishment of a national shrine to 'Love and Devotion." The couple were married for 82 years. Indian history is only a room away from miniature carvings of carriages and outside the museum is a fascinating collection of engines, farm machinery, horse drawn vehicles and early day earth-moving equipment. equip-ment. If all of these don't tempt the traveler to the area, surely the spectacular spec-tacular Mormon Miracle Pageant in Manti will. In 1991, the pageant sent a record attendance of 167,000 visitors. This year, the pageant will be performed July 9, 10, 11 and 15-1 15-1 8 at dusk on the south side of the Manti LDS Temple. The pageant depicts the "miracle f the birth and growth of the LDS Church. ' Creatively depicted scenes from the Book of Mormon ire featured, while telling the story af the restoration of the gospel and ) westward migration of the saints. The 300-member cast, along with the director and crew, are all volunteers. vol-unteers. Visitors are drawn from throughout the world to see the spectacle.
