Show Truck leaks diesel fuel By MARK EDDINGTON Staff Writer BOUNTIFUL A connection failed on an 1 8-wheel truck en route to Lakeview Hospital Friday morning morn-ing spilling an estimated 150 gallons of diesel fuel on Bountiful roads over a three to four block area. Bountiful police Sgt. Roger Green said the mechanical failure occurred shortly before 5 a.m. when the driver of a truck owned by C.I. Whitten & Co. of West Virginia entered Bountiful looking for a hospital after his co-worker began experiencing chest pains. "He made a turn there on 400 South about 300 East, and somehow during the turn a connector on the fuel tank broke. When he got to 500 South, he looked in the rearview mirror and saw some substance spilling out onto the road," Green explained. The driver continued up 500 South and on into the hospital driveway before he realized the leakage was coming from his vehicle. vehi-cle. He then notified the police. The diesel was spread out over a three or four block area. Bountiful police and fire officers and Davis County health officials spent four hours containing and cleaning up the spill. City employees laid dirt and other absorbing-type materials over the area and used heavy equipment to remove the diesel. The refuse was then taken to the Davis County Solid Waste Management landfill in Layton for disposal. No citation was issued, but Green said C.I. Whitten & Co. is being billed for cleanup costs. |
