Show Works by Van Wagoner on display at BDA C The BountifulDavis Art Center presents, "Recent and Not So Recent Works," by Richard Van Wagoner, Jan. 17-Feb. 21. The mixed media exhibit will feature oil paintings, watercolors, drawings and prints. A professor of art at Weber State University since 1959, Richard Van Wagoner is well known all over Utah, and his work is in permanent and private collections collec-tions throughout the United States. He has exhibited in many one-man shows and many more group shows in the last 27 years. After receiving an associate of science in artmusic at Weber State College and a bachelor of science at the University of Utah, he went on to obtain a masters of science in artprintmaking at Utah State University followed by a masters of science in artprintmaking at the University of Utah. His interest lies in painting highways with adjacent structures or landscapes. This is the environment he associates as-sociates with most often. "Perhaps my interest comes from the fact that I can't avoid being in the environment," envir-onment," he states. "I am more consistently involved with roads, vehicles and buildings, and with people in this setting, than with anything else in life." While he notes that the subject may have some historical value, he says he responds to the nostalgia and design of the environment. "It speaks of the moment." mo-ment." As a realist, he paints the environment with which we associate so often, highway and urban subjects. But he does not limit his art to only one medium. Over the years, his oil paintings have become more transparent and he uses a minimum of underpainting. Also, glazes over white canvas, juxtaposed to areas of opaque underpainting, are used to achieve luminosity. He said the technique might be associated with water-color water-color painting, a medium he uses extensively. His subject matter includes new modem freeways, old viaducts, pedestrians (some waiting for a parade), scenes of parked cars in the snow, and roads through scenic Utah landscapes to name a few. An opening reception for the artist will be held on Friday, Jan. 17, 7-9 p.m. The public is invited to attend free of charge. Gallery hours are: Monday 5-9 p.m.; Tuesday-Friday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; Saturday, 2-5 p.m. Closed Sunday and Holidays.
