Show Admirable growth obvious in Woods Cross By JAMS STUART WOODS CROSS-The growth of Woods Cross during the past decade is obvious to anyone who drives through the city. New subdivisions sub-divisions and new businesses have sprouted up in many areas. Thanks , to planning and good leadership, the growth has been in an orderly, controlled con-trolled manner. Two men who have helped the city in its growth are Mayor Ralph T. Argyle and former Mayor Lawrence Urry. Argyle's term as mayor will come to an end this month, since he chose not to run for re-election. At the last city council meeting, Argyle offered his resignation. He said, "I am certainly going to miss you. You have been like part of the family. fami-ly. My work in government has been a learning experience. As a council we have accomplished much during the last year because we were all involved and working to solve problems."-If problems."-If Argyle's work in government ' has been a learning experience for him, it has also been a teaching experience. ex-perience. He has been a fine exam- . pie of dedication and cooperation to those who have gone' to him with problems. PAGE solve problem predicaments. Urry was also successful as mayor. However, he did not turn away from serving the community when his term ended. Urry has been working as a liaison from the city council with the Bum Plant. Other people who have benefited the city are City Administrator, Bret Wahlen, Chief of Police Paul Howard, Recorder Alan T. Low and Public Works Director, Scott S. Anderson. They have all put in many long hours and have accomplished ac-complished much. A low-key, significant public employee is Treasurer Lucille S. Galloway. She manages to keep the city running smoothly. She does it so effortlessly that sometimes her contribution is overlooked. Those who have worked with Galloway will affirm her efficiency. Due to the establishment of a substantial tax base, Woods Cross' budget has only gone from $735,808.00 in 1980 to $1,027,051.00 in 1990. Many major projects have been completed in Woods Cross. The City Hall Complex was dedicated'in August of 87 and is the site of government offices and the Woods Cross Police Department. , Other projects, such as the 1200 j West Park improvements and the southern portion of the 800 West storm drain, were undertaken and completed during the decade. The city also improved with the completion of the 1200 West Park enclosure of the A-l storm drain. Construction of city monument signs also added an aura of stability to the community. An important update for the city of Woods Cross was the conversion of the city secretarial staff to sa computerized system for utility billing bill-ing and finances. Plans have also been completed for a new water reservoir system that will be of great value to the city. A situation that took a lot of negotiating and work to resolve was the shutting down of a hazardous waste facility in Woods Cross. Legal rights and responsibilities had to be verified and positions had to be taken. Woods Cross City was caught between be-tween residents' wishes and business busi-ness needs in the Barber Brothers' Dealership controversy. Residents did not want a car dealership in the area and were, worried ,abou becoming an island of residential" homes 1 surrounded by businesses? "; After much plea bargaining, a compromise com-promise was reached. A large wall was erected to divide the car dealership dealer-ship from the residences. The past decade has been good to Woods Cross. Precedents have been set for those who will be in control in th& future. The future decade has been built on a solid foundation thanks to all of those who gave so much time and effort in making Woods Cross a clean, comfortable, and desirable community in which to live. |
