Show ; Profile of Bountiful should remain unchanged in 1990's By GARY R. BLODGETT BOLnNTTlFUL' -- What is Bountiful's Boun-tiful's future for the year 2000? f: There were some mixed opinions but a basic general conception of this questionanswered at the se- j - cond in a series of meetings by the i Bountiful Charettes. . The general conception express-, express-, : : ed by a room full of prominent .' Bountiful business arid civic leaders , :- is simply this: there won't? be any ,, ' major changes in the atmosphere or lifestyle of the city, unless those , changes include major expansion of retail, commercial and light industries. in-dustries. Basically, the city's population is expected to increase about 20 per- ' cent, to a total of 45,000, not in- - eluding areas which may be annexed annex-ed into the city. ' Landwise, Bountiful is expected . to grow from about 12 to 15 square - milesj which wUl also include some expected annexation. ' ; ut the identity of (he city is ex-" ex-" pected to remain much the same as today, the group agreed. "It will continue to be a progressive community com-munity which provides quality living. liv-ing. It. will also maintain an at- , mosphere of being family oriented f and a city of beautiful homes and gardens," the group noted. 1 " The biggest difference of opinion was on the question of annexation . not the unincorporated area of south Davis County but one or more of the incorporated communities. Some expressed a desire to have J a unified Bountiful area, but no one 1 . Said they believed annexation of an already incorporated city would be possible in the next decade. " Most attending the Charelte agreed Bountiful has always had a good community spirit but has lacked a "heart.". They said the downtown area - perhaps Tabernacle Taber-nacle Square - should be the focus (or heart) of the city. ; A prior survey showed that a prof ' file of Bountiful revealed the city's average age of homeowner at 45 to 50, the average combined family income to be between $40,000 and $50,000 and the average adult education edu-cation to be about two years of college. col-lege. ; Bountiful isalso the most crime-free crime-free city amonphe 10 largest cities in Utah with apopulation of more than 10,000. Unemployment is by far the lowest in Bountiful of any Utah city, the city debt is less than any other community, the municipal-owned power rate is the lowest in the state, and assets show that Bountiful residents are die wealthiest of any in Utah. ; "Bountiful has many assets and very few liabilities, compared to other cities of similar size," said Bob Springmeyer, director of the Charettes' economic development study group. w , He did list the liabilities as being weakness in the city's economic base, lack of shopping opportunities and a need for diversion of tax revenue beyond sales and property taxes. i Next week (Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.) the Charettes will meet again to discuss improved economic and retail development, recreation, education edu-cation opportunities and community identity. i |
