Show Bountiful's multi-material recyclingtprogram kicks off By JAMS STUART f BOUNTIFUL-Congressman tajjne Owen attended a press conference con-ference Nov. 13, to kiekfPthe Bountiful City Multi-Material Recycling Program. ' 'The solid waste crisis is engulfing engulf-ing our country, our states and communities. Americans throw away more than most of the world has the opportunity to consume. We generate 160 million tons of garbage every year, more than 3 pounds per person per day. All this trash is glutting glut-ting our landfills; we are using an obscene percentage of our natural resources, and we are drowning in a sea of disposal. Bountiful's landfill will be full in 11 years. The real crime? Ninety-two percent of our trash is recyclable and yet, we recycle recy-cle a pathetic 10 percent ' ' The ceremony was attended by Dean Stahle, Mayor of Bountiful; Rusty Ludberg, Utah State Bureau of Solid Waste; Frank Pignanelli, State Legislator; Scott Kaerin, Rep-; Rep-; resentative from Congressman Owen's office; Marilyn Dahl, J.A. Taylor; Principal and Celestia Brunsdalc, Chairperson, Citizens Recycling Committee. "We must become a nation of citizen recyclers, and Bountiful's citizens are setting an impressive example." A statement from City Manager, Tom Hardy, was read at the kick-off. kick-off. He stated, "The City of Bountiful Boun-tiful is strongly supportive of recycling efforts by its citizens. Recycling represents the easiest, most painless way of reducing the waste stream and dealing with the ever-increasing' amount of solid waste which we are required to deposit de-posit in our landfill." Hardy said, "I wish you (Celeste Brunsdalc) and your committee every success in the world and will do whatever I can to give support from the . city's side to your efforts." |
