Show Learning Disabilities Assoc. plans meet students. The Learning Disabilities Association of Utah would like to extend an invitation to parents in Davis County to attend the Parent Support Meeting, Tuesday, Sept. 19, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Layton Public Library, 155 North Wasatch. This meeting is open and free to the public. For further information you are welcome to contact Gaylia Tanner, 295-0704. Most teachers are not trained to recognize symptoms of learning disabilities. Even at colleges with outstanding learning disability programs pro-grams and clinics, the regular education edu-cation majors are not necessarily taught about learning disabled children. Classroom teachers who do have some knowledge about learning disabilities usually can't apply that knowledge to real children. They are merely taught lists of symptoms, presented with interesting, but useless, theories about brain hemispheres and told inspiring stories about famous men who were successful despite their, learning problems. No one ever seems to teach teachers anything they can use. Cheryl Tyson, LCSW, will . discuss how parents can deal with professionals effectively in meeting the educational needs of their learning learn-ing disabled student at the September Parent Support Meeting of the Learning Disabilities Association of Utah, formerly the Utah Association of Children and Adults with Learning Disabilities, Ms. Tyson is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker for Granite School District Prior to her position in Utah, she worked for five years in the San Diego Children's Hospital. She has lectured in California and Utah, teaching educators how to work with learning . disabled . |
