Show DEA faculty supports pro-education rally- FARMINGTON - Monday evening even-ing DEA Faculty Representatives met and unanimously agreed to support a pro-education rally that will be held on the steps of the suite . capitol building on Monday, September 13 at 5:15 p.m. The rally will be jointly pbnned and spon-'-; sored by the DEA, the UE A and the professional education asportations - from Jordan, Granite and Salt Lake' : School Districts. - ' Mrs, Kathie Bone, President of the DEA, said all people who favor education are invited to participate in this rally tat is designed to show Governor Darsrter and the state , legislators that the public wants more tax dollars used for education. , Or-rizcrs hope the governor and , ,;',-''..; . W'-".fx.; '.,' state legislators will see thii show ' of state-wide support for education ; as a sign that surplus money in the state budget should be preserved and ear-marked for education and that steps should be taken to rectify te under-funding of education that . has been an issue for many years. . This action will take the place of a strike that the representatives ap proved by a two-to-one margin on Tuesday, Sept 5th. Mrs. Bone explained ex-plained the strike vote was contingent con-tingent upon support of the strike by other Wasatch Front school districts (Salt Lake, Jordan and Granite) who have not ratified their contracts. Educators plan to work with legislators to get more money for the WPU (weighted pupil unit), the formula that sets teacher salaries, money allocated for school supplies and class sizes. The DEA is having pro- education posters, printed for distribution at the rally. Cards will also be available for citizens to pick up and mail to their local legislators, - stating their concerns about the major education issues facing the state. "These can be comments about teacher salaries, supplies, class sizes or other concerns," Mrs. Bone said. Monday - evening, the Faculty Representatives also voted to form a task force to research potential action ac-tion teachers can take to improve funding for education. |
