Show HISTORICAL SOCIETY f Growers' market topic of meeting Many Centerville and Bountiful residents will recall the old Growers' Market in Salt Lake City. , For many years the farmers from the areas outside of Salt Lake had no central place where they could take their garden produce, but had to peddle it from place to place, and from door to door. A few years after the turn of the century, a group of far-sighted and enterprising men, mostly from Centerville and Bountiful, conceived the idea of forming a company to establish a marketplace in Salt Lake City where the farmers could sell their produce from one central cen-tral location. The road to accomplish this was rocky and hard. Many interesting adventures took place in the ensuing years, and they, together with the history of this important undertaking, will be related by William W. Tingey, who has first-hand knowledge of it, at the June 21 meeting of the Centerville Historical Society. Come and hear this story of enterprise and determination by a group of Centerville's early residents. This presentation will also be of great interest to many residents of Bountiful, a considerable number of whom would be descendants of those founders. Meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 21 at the city hall. All persons who know fust hand or by hearsay of any interesting or amusing incidents connected with the market or of any farmers who used it are invited to come and share with the group. , |
