Home-leasneas Home-leasneas does not only strike the indigent or uneducated, but also . victims of other misfortunes such as " fire, physical abuse and temporary unemployment It involves whole families, .taking the severest toll -on the lives of the children. Blacks and whites make up the largest segment of the homeless. Few Hispanics and Asians are victims of homelessneas because the cultures embrace strong extended family support. S. jresiderjta.are victims, .ofjhis demoralizing demor-alizing social plight , The Salvation Army stands ready 24 hours a day in your community, with over 1,000 temporary shelters ' nationwide, to offer confidentiality, a helping hand and a sympathetic ear. With Christian love, they offer . a haven from temporary dislocation and assistance in rinding a more permanent solution. While whole families or singles can redirect their thoughts and resources in the safety of a shelter, staff, professionals expect proof that the residents are making a sincere effort to find new housing. Residents meet with a counselor each day. On location classrooms are provided so that children are not deprived of educa tion during the' dislocation period. Clothing and personal hygiene articles arti-cles ' are -available, many through donations of the community. , ' - i There is no simple answer to the . growing social dilemma of home-lessness. home-lessness. Three levels of housing are necessary: emergency, transitional and permanent affordable housing. The Salvation Army is providing the first two. Lack of affordable housing will continue to perpetuate the plight of the homeless, but so will lack of education and inappropriate inappro-priate social conditioning.
