National Figure Skating Championships in Bal- -timore next month. Shown from left are : Heather Sniteman of Farmington, an alternate in Junior Ladies; Holly Cook of Bountiful, a finalist in Senior Ladies; Clay Sniteman of Farmington, a finalist in Novice Men; and Shannon Smith of Layton, a finalist in Novice Ladies. Kenna Bailey of Centerville, who now lives and trains in southern California, will be returning to Nationals again with partner John Denton as finalists in Senior Pairs' competition. V Four local figure skaters heading for U.S. Nationals Four South Davis County , teenagers teen-agers won berths to the US National Figure Skating Championships as the Pacific Coast Sectional Qualifying Qualify-ing Championships drew to a close in Seattle, Wash. All four are meW bers of the Utah Figure Skating Club and will be traveling to Baltimore, Balti-more, Maryland, Feb. 7-12. , For Holly Cook of Bountiful, it . will be her fifth and possibly most ' important trip to Nationals. I know I have a good chance of getting there, if I perform well." v.v;. i Her coach, Kris Shearard, concurs. con-curs. 'We have the best chance this year we have ever had. The three who skate the best will stay in for the next , Olympics. I just : want Holly to be consistent on her jumps and hit her routines as best she can.' , Holly said that what has helped . . . her the most to get to where she is today is "My faith in my Heavenly Father, and all the support of my - - friends at the rink and at school' . She plans to attend the University of Utah when her skating career is over and hopes to become an elementary ele-mentary i school teacher. Holly placed second behind Christ! Ya-maguchi Ya-maguchi at Pacific Coast after finishing fin-ishing second in figures, third in short program and second in her long program. Joining Holly at Nationals for the second time will be Clay Sniteman, , a 14-year-old Bountiful Junior High School student Clay hopes to place i higher than he did at last year's v nationals in Denver. He took fourth ' in Novfce;Meif and jgill sk$e again as'aNovicelli.3..:'.r: ' 'i Clay said, "My toughest competitor compe-titor will probably be David Delago from California. I just want to be able to land my double axle and skate my best Then I know I'll have fun." Gay finished in third place at Pacific Coast, after taking first in figures and fourth in his freestyle program. 4 Shannon Smith, a 14-year-old . from Layton, , who also attends Bountiful Junior High, will be making mak-ing her first trip as a National competitor. com-petitor. She finished second at Paci-' Paci-' fie Coast, after taking second in figures, fig-ures, and fifth in freestyle, to qualify qual-ify as a Novice Lady.' Shannon is , - "Excited, nervous and scared. I am going to be working hardest on my speed, my freestyle program and my triple." Kenna Bailey of Centerville will round out the Utah team. Kenna is currently in southern California, where she trains with her pair partner, part-ner, John Denton. They were last year's Junior Pair National Champions Cham-pions and finished in second place , at Pacific Coast, taking third in their ' original program, second in the : i long. They will compete as a Senior ' Pair at nationals this year. 1 T ; Heather Sniteman, competing' in Junior Ladies, placed fourth uv figures, fig-ures, sixth in short program, fifth in -; her long program and finished in fifth place overall She will be an alternate for nationals. Heather competed at Nationals last year as a Novice Lady, finishing seventh -, overall. Other UFSC competitors finished at coasts as follows: in Intermediate ' Men, Kevin Garrett took second in 4 figures, third in freestyle to place second overall. In Intermediate Ladies, Amby Pew was tenth in figures, fig-ures, 11th in freestyle and 11th" overall. Richard Dupaix and dance partner Kathy Binkoswld finished seventh overall |
