Show -x- . , - ; Braves edge Vikes, j but lead tightens in Ij region basketball ByTOMHARALDSEN ; Sporta Editor BOUNTIFUL-With just over : two minutes to go Friday night, : Bountiful High seemed to be on its : way to a rather easy victory over Viewmont in the rematch of the I Region Four basketball foes. The j Vikes, however, had other plans. Trailing by as much as 20 points in the second half, Viewmont began ' ; a vigorous fourth-quarter rally with " - ; the score 67-51. The Vikes scored i 1 3 straight points, and just missed a : potential game-tying three-pointer - as they dropped a narrow 67-64 de cision, i Meanwhile, the Salt Lake bullies, Highland and East, were also pulling pull-ing out last second wins over Davis and Woods Cross, respectively. BOUNTIFUL in VIEWMONT 64 At Bountiful, the Braves moved to a 34-22 halitime lead and steadily stea-dily increased it against Viewmont, a team that entered the contest with a two-game winning streak. Boun- tiful made an uncharacteristic five i three-point baskets in the first half, ; and shot 52 percent from the field . for the half. Strangely, both teams ! shot just two free throws before : intermission, both hitting one of I them. I The third quarter was more of the ; same. Bountiful taking its biggest lead at 48-27 after Troy Fuller canned a three point shot with 3:30 I left in the period. As the fourth quarter began, it was 54-37 for the j host Braves. - Even five minutes into the I period, it seemed Viewmont's j chances to come back were not j existent Bountiful led 67-51, and fans began chanting for their j favorite subs to come off the bench, j But the Vikes, playing without starter star-ter Kelly Bland who had fouled out I earlier, mounted a tremendous : comeback. -Dave Chides ter and j Mark Walker got things started with L baskets, Walker's a three-pointer that made it 67-55, and when Chidester scored at 1:30 mark, it :- was 67-57. '- i Bountiful had a pass stolen, and . Chidester tallied again with 1:12 . left. After both teams failed to con-' con-' vert free throws. Walker; shoveled i in an. underhand layup and was fouled with 43 seconds left. His free throw made it 67-62. . - f : . Again, Bountiful missed the front end of a one-and-one, and Sean Oiler Oi-ler scored with 30 seconds left to make it 67-64. The. remaining seconds se-conds saw both teams miss free ; throws. Viewmont , rebounded a : miss with 11 seconds left, , but a : three-point shot missed at the five-, five-, second mark, and Bountiful escaped ' with its life. ' Chidester had a brilliant game, ; finishing with four three-pointers and 30 points. Diler added 10, while i . i Bland and Walker both had nine for ; ' : the Vikes. Bountiful was paced by : Fuller with 22, Brad Hartvigsen i with 16 and Steve Wilkinson with ' " , 13. The Braves made just eight of ' 22 free throws in the game. HIGHLAND 69 DAVIS 66 f At Highland, the Rams pulled . away from the free throw line to ' beat Davis, which experienced a - ' scary moment after the game in the locker room. Senior Chad Poulson . suffered from ; hyperventilation , after leaving the shower, and medi-. cal personnel worked on him for 1 almost an hour before he was trans- : ferred to the University of Utah , ; Medical Center. , . . Tt was pretty scary for'awhile,'' .-! .-! Davis coach John Robison related. ' "We have a trainer with us each" game, Jeff McFarland, and he did a j great job working with Chad until Nhe paramedic arrived." Poulson was released from the medical center about 2 a.m. Saturday, and Robison thinks his forward should be fully recovered by week's end. . The Rams took a 39-31 lead, but Davis fought back Highland went to the line an unusually high nurn -ber of times, 33, making 23 shots and edging the Darts. Brad Gardner led Davis with 22 points, while Poulson added 19. Kris Hicks continued to lead Highland High-land with 29 points. EAST 52 WOODS CROSS 51 At East, the Leopards pulled into a tie with the Wildcats for second place with a fourth-quarter rally for victory. East took - a 14-8 lead, expanded it to 29-22 at the half, then fell behind when the Wildcats outscored them 16-7 in the third period. Woods Cross was hampered by limited duty from Todd Fuller, who scored just five points. The Wildcats Wild-cats made 15 of 23 free throws, while East made just six trips to the line, hitting on five Jermaine Haliburton paced East with Vk points. Woods Cross was led by Dave Simon with 14 and Mike Wright with 12. TUESDAY'S GAMES WOODS CROSS 76 BOUN-TTFUL56 BOUN-TTFUL56 The shocker of the night was at Bountiful, where the Wildcats, sans league-leading scorer -Todd Fuller, were thrashing the host Braves. Fuller Ful-ler sat out the game with back pains, but it was Bountiful who felt the pain in the backside. Woods Cross pulled . from a 16-12 first quarter lead to a 37-21 halftime advantage, as the Wildcats welcomed back junior Kitt Rawl-ings, Rawl-ings, who saw only limited action in the Davis game the Friday before and had missed the first three region games. Rawlings' first half scoring was the key to the big lead. Bountiful kept things close until the fourth period, when Woods Cross put the ganie away from the free throw line. The Wildcats made 43 trips to the stripe, hitting 30 entity ent-ity shots. 'Woods Cross finished with 53 percent shooting from the field, compared to, unofficially, 39 percent for the Braves. . Rawlings paced the attack with 30 points, including three three-point three-point baskets and 13-16 free throws. Dave Simon added , 14 points, Chad Rawlings 1 1 and Justin Jus-tin Shaw 10. Center Mike Wright scored nine points and had 17 rebounds. re-bounds. - " , v Troy Fuller led Bountiful with 15, Steve Wilkinson added 14 and Brad Hartvigsen nine. The Braves made 13 of 19 shots from the line.; VIEWMONT 56 DAVIS 49 At Davis, die Vikings moved back into the thick of things with a win over the host Darts, as Kelly . Bland, Mark Walker, Dave Chidester Chides-ter and Darren Baker all scored in double figures. Daviss led 39-36 after three periods, but Viewmont quickly caught up and took the lead in the final quarter, never nailing again. Viewmont came up with crucial rebounds re-bounds down the stretch, and the Darts were cold-shooting again, -t Bland had 14 points, Walker 12, Chidester 11 and Baker 10. For Davis, Chad Poulsen led the way .with 14 points and Brad Gardner had 11. r EAST 71 HIGHLAND 50 ' At Highland, the Leopards battled bat-tled back from a 17-14 first quarter deficit to drop the Rams, as Jermaine Jer-maine Haliburton led the way with 31 points. Four Leopards were in double figures, while Highland was paced by Kris Hicks with 23 points. |
