Show KUED offers great holiday en tertainm en t This year's December pledge schedule on KUED Channel 7 looks like a great reason to pop some popcorn, curl up in front of the fire, and tune into some of the year's best musical specials, and heartwarming Christmas tales. Beginning Nov. 30 through December 11, the station will offer many Christmas specials. "The Nutcracker" will be presented Thursday, Dec. 1 at 7:30 p.m. (approximately 90 minutes). Mikhail Baryshnikov choreographed this American Ballet Theatre production of "The Nutcracker." Set to music composed by Tchaikovsky, the story of Clara and her nutcracker-prince continues to enchant en-chant audiences today. "James Stewart: A Wonderful Life" Friday, Dec. 2 at 8 p.m. (90 minutes). Hosted by Johnny Carson. This program will . document Stewart's long career with vintage film clips and rare photographs. The 90-minute program is highlighted by interviews inter-views with co-stars, collaborators, directors and friends. "It's A Wonderful Life" Saturday, Dec. 3 at 12:50 p.m. (2'2 hours), the 1946 movie classic starring Donna Reed and Jimmy Stewart as George and Mary, a couple embracing life in the small town of Bedford Falls, USA. When George's uncle misplaces mis-places a large bank deposit, George wishes he had never been born. A heavenly messenger grants his wish but shows him what would happen to the town if he had not been born. "Miracle Down Under," Saturday, Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. (approx. two hours). A touching story of love, values and the true meaning mean-ing of Christmas. Set in 1868 Australia, "Miracle Down Under" follows the adventures of a young imaginative boy who creates a more interesting life for himself by making up stories. When he mistakes a ne'er-do-well ex-goldminer for Father Christmas, his faith in the magic of Christmas inspires his family, neighbors, and even Father Christmas. "Christmas Eve on Sesame Street," Sunday, Dec. 4 at 5:40 p.m. (one hour). This musical Christmas special for the whole family features the Muppets, cast of "Sesame Street," and skaters from Holiday on Ice. Three original songs highlight the holiday program including "True Blue Miracle" by Carol Hall and "Keep Christmas With You and I Hate Christmas by Sam Pottle and David Axlerod. James Galway's Christmas Carol, Thursday, Dec. 8 at 7 p.m. (approx. one hour). The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Ambrosia Singers of London, and the Boy Choristers of St. Alban's Abbey, Hertfordshire, England, join internationally famed flutist James Galway for a performance of traditional Christmas carols and refreshing new arrangements of holiday classics, many by Galway himself. Songs include "Silent Night," "Zither Carol," "The Holy Boy," "Past Three O'Clock," "Ave Maria," "I Wonder as I Wander," "Jesus Christ the Apple Tree," "We Wish You a Merry Christmas," and "Greensleeves." "Christmas with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Shirley Verrett," Friday, Dec. 9 at 8 p.m. (one hour), A holiday special from Temple Square with the 325 member Mormon Tabernacle Choir and opera diva Shirley Verrett. Set amid the bright lights and poinsettias of the Tabernacle, the musical program includes such Christmas favorites as "Joy to the World," "O Holy Night," and a hunting rendition of "I Wonder as I Wander." "A Christmas Special with Luciano Pavarotti," Friday, Dec. 9 at 9 p.m. (approx. one hour). From the majestic Notre Dame Cathedral in Montreal, the internationally acclaimed Luciano Pavarotti highlights this program of Christmas favorites. Included In-cluded are performances by the Canadian Boys' Choir, Les Petits Chanteurs du MontRoyal, and the adulf choir, Les Disciples Disci-ples de Massenet. Among the traditional Christmas songs performed per-formed are "Adeste Fideles," 'O Holy Night," and "Ave Maria." "Oliver," Saturday, Dec. 10 at 7 p.m. (3 hours). Oliver, an orphan living in a boys' workhouse, runs away and falls in with the unsavory Artful Dodger. Dodger takes Oliver back to his abode where he lives with several other street boys under the eye of Fagin, a crook who trains them to be pickpockets. This film adaptation of Dickens' "Oliver Twist," is the winner of six Academy Awards. "A Peter, Paul and Mary Holiday Concert," Sunday, Dec. 1 1 at 8 p.m. (approx. 2 hours). Folk music trio Peter, Paul, and Mary celebrate the holidays in this concert special, taped before a live audience in New York City. Accompanied by the New York Choral Society, the trio sings many holiday favorites, including "Silent Night," O Come All Ye Faithful," "We Wish You a Merry Christmas," "Hallelujah," "'Twas the Night Before Christmas," and "Light One Candle," as well as the classic folk songs "Blowin' in the Wind," "This Land Is Your Land," "Puff, the Magic Dragon," and "Weave Me the Sunshine." |
