Show G. Saunders named interim county clerk by commissioners By KATHLEEN WILSON f pi f ' GLEN E. SAUNDERS FARMINGTON Glen E. Saunders was appointed interim county clerk by the two remaining commissioners on Wednesday, Wednes-day, June 22. He resigned his county commission seat in order to take the clerk job, and will run for the clerk position on the November ballot. In May, county clerk Michael Allphin was appointed to a state district court administrative position, thus leaving his county clerk space vacant. Saunders was chosen among the names submitted by the Davis County Republican Central Committee earlier, which included Glen Saunders, Margene Isom who has filed to run on the ballot, and Lois Pickett, whose family owns and operates Servus Drug in Bountiful. Com. Tippetts expressed appreciation for the interest shown by these citizens in desiring to serve in county government. He f said many fine people that could well serve the public are " intimidated by the exposure in public life and the citizens are the losers when capable individuals don't risk serving in public positions. The appointment leaves a vacancy on the county commission that will be filled in the same manner the Davis County Republican Central Committee will submit three names to county coun-ty commissioners Tippetts and Peters. Thev will promptly choose one to fill the interim seat, as there is much work to be completed by all three commissioners. As he is changing positions, Mr. Saunders explained his motives mo-tives for making the change and told of his background. He grew up with political life, for his first 16 years his father was a member of the Ogden City Commission. During those times he saw his father deal with tough issues; 25th Street and expanding needs for services. When he was 30 years old, living in the small city of Clinton, some citizens asked him to run for mayor. He won, serving two terms. From there he served on planning commissions and special service district boards. In 1980 he was approached in a swimming pool, by citizens asking him to run for county commission. He said he couldn't get out without saying yes. Interested in serving the people in the best way possible, he has been a commissioner for 7 V2 years. "All in all, it has been a rich experience," he stated. Saunders was sworn in as county clerk on Wednesday. He assumes his official duties immediately. He is planning to spend more time with his family in the evenings that had previously been used by meetings in the commissioner's many duties, city councils, mayors, etc. He had been an educator for 14 years and has much interest in helping students and citizens understand local government. He may even have time to pursue writing educational materials about local government using his inside perspective. |
