" Exploring the mystique of fireworks , By JUDY JENSEN Editor This weekend all across the county thrill-seekers will unite in parks and stadiums to witness fabulous pyrotechnic displays. Fireworks seem to instill in us an almost undeniable urge to grab the family and a blanket and head for the "best" spot to view the dis play. What mystique surrounds the bright colors and loud noises the fireworks produce? We asked a few county residents for their explanation ex-planation for this phenomenon and they gave a variety of opinions. One said she felt that "fireworks excite the primal urge to destroy." Others were a little less intense. One gentleman felt it was more of a patriotic desire, "You know, the rockets red glare and all that jazz." Another expressed that we have always been told, "Don't play with fire or you might get burned, but that rule doesn't apply to July 4." Wendy Hill said she loves, "The bright colors against the dark sky. We go every year as a family to Kaysville. The whole family goes as a group. At home my husband gets fireworks every year. We also go to Bear Lake on July 24 and set off our own. I'd feel like I'd missed the holiday if we didn't have fireworks." fire-works." Wendy's son, eight-year-old Dallin, said he loves the "army tanks" best of the fireworks they use at their home. Those along with the "flowers and snakes" are his favorites. When he goes to the "big" fireworks displays, his favorites favo-rites are "the big red and pink ones." Kristin Nakaya loves the huge displays best. "When they go up in the air it is something new and out of the ordinary. I love the puff balls und the big red ones. The fireworks we do at home are kind of boring compared to the big ones," she said. Daniel Dean said man has been intrigued with fireworks, "ever since the invention of gun powder. I love the bright lights and colors. We do a few at home, but we love the big displays best. There is something about the power of being able to create the colors and fire in the sky that appeals to men," said Daniel. The colors are the thing that appeal most to Wendy Babbit. "It's really exciting to hear the noise and see the colors. We usually usual-ly do our own at home too, and that is a lot of fun, but they are not as exciting as the big ones. I don't know why I like them, but we've ! always looked forward to July 4 for i the fireworks," she said. It seems to be a combination of ' ' ' things that make the fireworks displays dis-plays so appealing. Bright lights and colors, power, primal urges and perhaps nostalgia all combine to make us want to join the crowds for the fireworks display. Whatever Whatev-er the reason, we agree fireworks are fabulous, so grab your blanket and we will see you at the park. |
