The Vikes moved into the fourth round as the tournament's only undefeated un-defeated team with a 3-1 victory over Skyline Monday night at Clearfield High. Viewmont won as it has all year, with excellent defense de-fense and opportunistic offense. Senior Dave Lauder,, who is bucking for state player-of-the-year honors, assisted with two goals, but this game was decided after Dave Chidester scored early, and then Matt Brenchley knocked in a pair of goals , the final one in the last two minutes, to assure the win. "We're playing really well right now," coach Richard Cook said. "We're just taking them (the games) one at a time, and we'll see what happens." But the enthusiastic crowds that have followed the Vikes all year seem sure that this Viewmont team could capture its first "official" soccer state title ever. To do that, they need to win two more games. Byers scored on a penalty kick in the 14th minute of the second half as the Braves beat the Lakers for a state berth. The contest was a defensive struggle throughout, but Byers was tripped in the box and launched a shot into the left corner of the net for the game's only score. THURSDAY ROUND ONE WOODS CROSS 6 OLYMPUS 0 The Wildcats had little trouble with the Titans, as Tommy Ange-los Ange-los scored just 30 seconds into the game. He added another goal 60 seconds later, and a third before halftime. Jerome Demourin also scored, giving the Cats a 4-0 advantage. advan-tage. Angelos and Jason Smith scored in the second half, and keeper Ryan Arbon shut down the Titans as Woods Cross moved on. Bountiful may have been feeling the effects of a hectic final week, when they played play-ed four games in four days. SATURDAY ROUND TWO BOUNTIFUL 1 TAYLORSVILLE 0 The Braves came back strong in the loser's bracket with a great effort to eliminate the Warriors. After a scoreless first half, Adam Bombard finally put the Braves on the board with a score following two great passes from Keith Byers to Mike Peffer to Bombard. Bountiful took a 1-0 lead just before be-fore the half when Adam Bombard raced in off the wing and scored in the 39th minute. A defensive struggle strug-gle followed in the second half as well, until sophomore Gary Olson scored on a penalty kick in the 25th minute to make it 2-0. Woods Cross' Tommy Angelos was tripped in the box seven minutes mi-nutes later, and his penalty kick made it 2-1, but the Braves withstood with-stood the Wildcat attack the rest of n the game for the win. Bountiful and Viewmont have met twice this season, with the first game ending in a tie and the second a Brave win. Should Bountiful win tonight, then the Braves would play tomorrow night at 6 p.m. against the winner of the Brighton-Skyline Brighton-Skyline game this evening. The winner of that game would then play Viewmont on Friday at 6 p.m. for the title. A Viking win tonight would put them in tomorrow's match, with a chance to win the state title then.
