The car was struck broadside by a northbound semi-trucK. Hwy. 89 mishap kills teen 0 By GARY R. BLODGETT FRUIT HEIGHTS A semi-truck loaded with water softener salt, collided with a passenger passen-ger car on U.S. Highway 89 Thursday evening, killing the 16-year-old driver of the car. Killed was Melanie Petersen of Roy. Driver of the truck from Mills, Wyo., was not injured and there were no passengers involved, according to Trooper Bruce Johnson of the Utah Highway Patrol, who investigated. He said the Petersen car was attempting a left turn onto 161 North Street, Fruit Heights, when it was struck broadside by the loaded truck which was northbound on U.S. Highway 89. Miss Petersen was treated at the scene by Davis County paramedics and airlifted to LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City wnere she died shortly after midnight. She suffered extensive head and internal injuries. Trooper Johnson said no citations were issued The truck driver tried but could not avoid the accident. Miss Petersen was not wearing a seat belt but was not thrown from her 1986 model vehicle. US Highway 89 is fast becoming the death strip" of Utah and studies are underway to have traffic control lights installed on the stretch of divided highway between Farming-ton Farming-ton and Ogden. . t Local residents have long complained that it ; is "extremely dangerous to cross the highway, j make turns, or to enter the highway because of j lack of traffic control and because the speed j along that stretch is at least 55 miles per hour." j |
