Show j-imburg's removal Petition circulation has 'substantial success' A group of University students , reports substantial success in ; circulating a petition calling for the , removal of Nevin Limburg from his post on the ASUU Finance Board, i The petition, initiated last week, ; now contains the signatures of over ' 200 students committed to Lim- burg's impeachment. According to ; Article XIV of the ASUU Con-! Con-! stitution, 500 signatures are ; required to bring articles of im-. im-. peachment against an elected off icer of the AS UU or a member of its student governing bodies. Two Chronicle reporters, Babs De Lay and Ron Varela, formulated the petition, which charges that "Nevin Limburg is unworthy of continuing in his present position." The petition further states, "We feel that the blatant plagiarism committed by Mr. Limburg in an article presented as his original work in the Nov. 14 issue of the Daily Utah Chronicle constitutes actions unbecoming a member of a student governing body of the ASUU." Mr. Limburg's article, printed in a column titled "Abortion: Another View," was contested as unoriginal in a letter to the editor several days latei Investigation later showed that an article almost indentical to Mr. Limburg's was published earlier in a magazine called The Freeman. The Freeman article was written by Dr. Thomas Johnson. Limburg contsntion Limburg contended that his source was an article from The Utah Independent, and that, "My error, which I now realize is flagrant, lies in my failure to state as a source The Utah Independent, and, further, in that I failed to discover the author of the article printed in the paper and give him just credit." Still another charge against Limburg, although this was not mentioned in the petition, is that Limburg wrote a note to Chad Dobson, the University's Union programs coordinator, requesting free tickets to Joan Baez' benefit concert for Utah's migrant farm workers in exchange for assistance in future financial matters, which were not specified in the note. 'A joke' In a later comment, Limburg pointed out that, "It is commonplace com-monplace for the ASUU officers to receive tickets to ASUU-sponsored events." Chad Dobson remarked that he disregarded the note as "a joke." If the petition is successful in bringing articles of impeachment against Limburg, the Finance Board member will be brought before the ASUU Judiciary for trial. If found guilty by five members of the Judiciary, the ASUU Constitution specifies that the Judiciary may impose appropriate sanctions against Limburg. |
