Show I Page Eight Papooses snare win with fumble recovery by CHRIS COLEMAN Chronicle Staff The Papooses won again, but the final decision didn't come about until the waning moments of the game when line-backer "Dave O'Bagy recovered a Maverick fumble with just under 30 seconds left to play. It was the Freshman s 17th win in a row. The final score read: Utah 25; Mesa 20, with kicker Randy Hardy coming out on top of this week s heroes. Hardy kicked three field ii v ? qoals and two points after touchdowns touch-downs for a total of 11 P'n s- Utah scored the first time it had its hands on the ball. Under the guidance of Steve Kincanon, he Papooses marched 73 yards for the touchdown. The final play was a 10-vard pass from Kincanon to tight-end, David Maffey for the Papoose's first aerial touchdown of the season. Back in the game The Mavericks were right back in the ball game, however, as a result of a 98-yard kick-off return by Mesa's Ron Shepard, who was a running menace all through the game. The point-after, however, was missed, and the score was 7-6, Utah. The next Papoose score came after 53 yards. But failing to hit paydirt, they had to settle for a 33-yard 33-yard field goal -Hardy's first. The final score of the half came after a 70-yard drive, again engineered by Kincanon. Mike Spencer caught the final 6-yard pass that resulted in the Papoose's second touchdown. Just previous to this drive, the Maverick quarterback quar-terback was driven out from his own end zone for a safety. Second half disaster The second half resulted in total disaster for Utah's offense, as they were forced to punt five times, had two passes intercepted and lost one fumble. They failed to sustain a single drive. But they did manage to get close enough for two field goals by Hardy, a 35-yarder and a 32-yarder. It was a different story for the defense, however, as it intercepted three passes and recovered three fumbles, to keep Utah's hopes alive for a victory. Mesa got back into the game by running back a Utah punt for 38 yards and for a touchdown. An interception, that resulted in a touchdown three plays later, was Mesa's final tally. Good defense Head Coach Johnson said of the game, "It's the defense that won it for us. The defense did a tremendous job."
