Show Homecoming royalty 'Happy' junior made queen Rebecca L. Landward was chosen as this year's Homecoming Queen in finals Friday night in the Union Ballroom. Helen Obey was the first runner up and Jeanne Nebeker came in as second runner up. Rebecca, or Becky as she likes to be called, is a junior majoring in English. She plans to teach in a secondary school in Utah after she graduated. She says her favorite authors are American. Miss Obey was sponsored by the Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority. Plays violin Jeanne Nebeker, second runner up in the contest, is an honors student from Salt Lake City. Jeanne is a junior majoring in history. She is active in community services both on and off campus as tutoring chairman for Outreach and in the LDSSA Comunity Services. She likes skiing and has worked as a ski instructor, but also enjoys water-skiing. Another one of her hobbies is writing. She has written for her high school yearbook and likes to write poetry too. She lists among her talents playing the violin. Miss Nebeker was sponsored by her sorority, Chi Omega. Becky is active in LDSSA and is an officer in her sorority, the Delta Gammas. She has also served in the sophomore womans organization, organ-ization, the Spurs. Horses and the outdoors interest Becky. She likes to spend time at her parents' cabin on the Weber River. Her hobbies include art, violin and guitar. She enjoys doing craft art, like decoupage, as she explains or "any type that you use your hands with." She plays the violin and a little guitar. About herself she says "I love life, I'm Happyl" Specializes in exercise Miss Landward was sponsored by the Delta Gamma sorority. First runner up, Helen Obey, is a junior from Chicago, Illinois. Helen is a physical education major who also likes dance and the theater. She has been on the University Womans Gymnastics team for three years specializing in floor exercises. She qualified to go to the College National's in her freshman year. She also enjoys playing tennis and has been a cheerleader for two years. Teaches in spare time Miss Obey finds time in her busy schedule to be a historian for her sorority, Kappa Alpha Theta, and to help teach gymnastics and dance for the Community Action Program in central city. Miss Obey said "I'm glad Homecoming now has some purpose. Beauty contests are a bunch of baloney. I'm glad we're doing something with outreach." |
