Show Lobos next Pa",s""'" Utes whup Pokes; title near? by GARY LESSER Chronicle Staff Despite a convincing 27-6 win over Wyoming in Laramie Saturday, the University football team can ill afford a moment of rest, mostly due to its opponent in Robert L. Rice Stadium, Oct. 28, New Mexico. ' A fine team effort, mostly on the ground thoroughly had the Pokes bewildered during the course of the chilly, snow-filled afternoon. The Utes were led by Gene Belczyk, who had his second 100 yard-plus rushing game, scored two TD's and caught the bulk of Utah s passes. The Utes are now 2-1 in Western Athletic Con-ference Con-ference play, and have the league crown if they win their next four WAC games. But their next rival in Saturday's homecoming game, the Lobos, are coming off a 56-7 crushing of UTEP. By comparative scores, which admittedly mean next to nothing, the Utes will have their hands full with a tough crew from Albuquerque. Utah beat UTEP 39-20, playing reserves much of the way. Arizona still is unbeaten in WAC play, and ASU also has a shot. It appears whoever loses only one game will trip to the Fiesta Bowl. Because of a difference dif-ference in scheduling, ASU must hope for other WAC, teams to lose two games for the Sun Devils to have a chance. By finishing 8-3, the Utes would assure themselves a Fiesta Bowl berth and a chance for 9-3, their best season in years. |
