From such inauspicious beginnings came the first motorcycle which wheeled onto the streets of Winthrop, Mass., in 1866. Since that time the motorcycle has gone through a long history of development. At one time it was branded as a tool of the devil while in the hands of the infamous Hell's Angels. Later it became the urban comfort to businessmen tired of fighting both city traffic insufficient parking facilities. Now it's in the hands of the students. And as campuses become more cramped, motorcycles and their forerunner, the bicycle, have become a popular form of transportation. They're convenient except in winter weather. They're small and economical. But most important of all they're easy to find a parking place for. Nearly everyone is familiar with the roar of motorbike or the silent streak of its bi-pedular counterpart. They've been blamed for disturbing the peace on the east bench. They've been branded as a polluter of our air. But they still provide an economical form of transportation. As spring turns around the corner more bikes will appear on campus in both versions. Approximately 1,000 or more bicycles will probably make their appearance on campus and an unestimated number of the motorized variety will terrorize pedestrians as well.
