Show Conservation campaign Operation Turn-Off gives kilowatts rest University President Alfred C. Emery has issued a bulletin asking students and staff to join an "Operation Turn-Off" campaign to cut down the light bill. "All you have to do," he said, "is turn off your lights when you're not using them." During the 1970-71 fiscal year, the University's electric bill was up $46,000 from the year before-a total $597,000. To reduce this, the president suggests two steps: If you leave your office for a period longer than 20 minutes, turn your light off before you go. Experts say it is not economical to turn fluorescent lights off for a shorter length of time. If you are last to leave a classroom in the afternoon, turn the lights off before you leave. Some may burn for as long as three or four hours with no one using them before custodians turn them off at night. "Operation Turn-Off" was begun on a limited scale last August by the Physical Plant in an effort to hold the line on expenses. Custodians were asked to turn off unused fixtures at night. Cost comparisons after the changes indicated a savings of as much as $3,600 on the electric bill for a single month. |
