Running events are scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. each night while the field trials start at 7 p.m. Friday and the finals at 7:15 Saturday. Finals in all events but the 3,000 meter steeplechase will be held Saturday. The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) will be slightly favored fa-vored against defending champion Brigham Young University (BYU). Arizona and New Mexico will be battling for third place while the remaining schools go for the table scraps. Sharing equal billing with the tight team race are several individual in-dividual events in which conference, confer-ence, meet and stadium records are likely to be shattered. Ralph Mann of BYU, who holds the American record of 49.4 in the 440 yard intermediate hurdles, will be assaulting the world's record rec-ord of 49.3. Mark Murro of Arizona Ari-zona State University (ASU) holds the American record for the javelin, jav-elin, having heaved the spear 300' this season. Murro is t h e first American to achieve this mark. Other class athletes entered in the meet include Kerry Pearce of UTEP, who is co-holder of the world indoor two mile record and captured the NCAA Steeplechase in 1968, Pertti Pousi of BYU who has won the NCAA triple jump and long jump, Chuck La Benz of ASU who is the first sub-four minute miler in the conference and Harrington Jackson of UTEP who has been clocked in 9.2 for the 100 yard dash. These are only a few in a standout field of competitors. com-petitors. The meet also boasts many versatile ver-satile athletes such as Paul Gibson Gib-son of UTEP and Mann of BYU. Gibson probably will be running in the 100, 220, 120 high hurdles and sprint medley. Mann will enter en-ter the 440, 440 yard intermediate hurdles, and two relays. ICUKT DUDNICK, will carry the Utes' hopes in the discus event. Dudnick has broken the school record four times this year and currently cur-rently holds it with a toss of 171 feet. |
