Show 0 Pokes ambush Ufes BY TOM WHARTON Sports Writer Ever since a group of Redskins surprised Custer in the Battle of the Big Horn, the Cowboys in the white hats have been seeking revenge. re-venge. When the Cowboys from Wyoming Wyo-ming massacred the Utah Redskins Red-skins 98-85 in Laramie last night, Custer may have smiled in his grave as the Cowpokes challenge king Redskin for the honor of being be-ing the top team in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). The play of Wyoming's top sharp shooters, Carl Ashley and Stan Dodds, left the Utes looking for a peace pipe. Ashley hit 26 and Dodds added 24, 12 from the free throw line, between them. Redskin Chief Jack Gardner said that Wyoming "outshot us and out played us. We make no excuses. Wyoming is a super team and they played a super game." Wyoming out shot Utah 54 percent per-cent from the field which was too much for the cold shooting Utes who managed to miss 55 Shots for a 42 percent field goal clip. Head brave Mike Newlin rifled in 31 points to lead all scorers on the floor. Newlin and side-kick Jim Mahler, who added 16, were the only Redskins who played well. Ken Gardner, playing one of his poorest games, hit only four of 15 shots from the field. All his field goals came in the second half.
