Show the new music BY STEVE POULSON Entertainment Writer Out of the cacoon The Iron Butterfly was bound to be recognized sooner or later. It's just that when a group is talented, creative and determined enough, it's only a matter of time untill the word gets out. For a long time their following was limited to the L.A. "underground" but since their first LP "Heavy", the group has gradually made their way to their present stature. The name Iron Butterfly is one of those clever little "definition-embodied-in-a-name" creations of the Sani-fiush prototype: Iron-symbolic of heavy (as in sound) Butterfly-versatile; an object to be used freely in the imagination. Still very appropriate, the name addresses possibly the most original heavy sounding groups in existence. Ron Bushy their uncompromising drummer, and Lee Dorman, a stubbornly penetrating bass player, are responsible for the heavy half of the picture. continued on page 10 I the new music I musicians (drums, bass, guitar, organ) is basically a hard-driving jamming type of band. Wishful Thinking will be appearing along with Celebration, a local rock group of five. Heavy, heavy, heavy! "The heavy rock trip with the chick drummer" will be playing at the Old Mill through Sunday. Charlie Chaplin films will relieve Sunday twice each night. continued from page 7 On top of this, there is Erik Brann, the child prodigy who at seven years of age was a concert violinist. Presently on guitar, his playing exhibits quite an unusual style, possibly because of his confused childhood. Doug Ingle is the organist, founder and musical advisor to the group. Doug's father was a church organist and much of the classical influence of the church is in his writing. The Iron Butterfly will play the Salt Palace Saturday night. Also present will be Rapid Transit, a five-piece group including organ and flute. Rumor has it that their sound resembles the Gregorian chant-should be interesting. Also Saturday night, Wishful Thinking will deliver their exciting sound in the Union Bldg. Since their formation a year ago, Wishful Thinking has produced some of the best heavy rock to be heard locally. Lately the group has been accepting a limited number of engagements, as they have been experimenting with vocal harmony and other musical forms, as well as doing some more writing.
