Show New tax bill aids students To alleviate the student financial problem Sen. Frank E Moss D-Utah, is introducing an amendment to the lax Reform Bill designed for the needs of college students. Sdering the shortage of cash students face because o excess money being deducted from payroll checks Sen. Moss hL proposed that taxes be withheld on the basts of a student's stu-dent's projected total wages for the taxable year Before, students paid taxes on the basis that they would be full-time workers. The fact that many students work only during the summer resulted in excess taxes withheld with only a return to wait for during spring and no money for the fall. M . Under Sen. Moss' amendment, students would gain more take home pay, probably receive no tax refund, but at least have money on hand for the crucial expenses of fall quarter. To gain the benefits of this type of amendment, all a student stu-dent would have to do is present a certificate to his employer who would fix the rate of taxes to be withheld. This type of legislation is noteworthy, not only because of its practicality but because it backs the student's role. We applaud Sen. Moss for his foresight in the Senate and for proving that students are not the forgotten minority. The strength of this amendment will make it possible for students to face the spiraling costs of education and critical problem of finances. |
