Show RYU rnps division crown CSU sends Ute nine into WAC cellar By Geoff Towns Staff Writer The Redskin baseball team ended its 1969 campaign by winning one of a three-game series with Colorado State University at Fort Collins over the weekend. The two losses hurled the Utes into the northern division cellar of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). with Wyoming in Laramie. The Cowboys needed to sweep the series to tie BYU for the lead. Wyoming won the first game Friday, 6-0, extending its conference winning streak to eight and handing BYU's ace pitcher Richard Zinniger his first loss in 12 decisions. The Cowboys scored four runs in the eighth frame to wrap it up. Wyoming cut it even closer by taking the first game of Saturday's twin bill, 7-2, as it knocked off BYU's second best pitcher Ken Crosby. But in the nightcap, the Pokes couldn't penetrate the hurling of Brad Meyring and went down to a 12-0 defeat. The Cougars broke the game open early with an eight run barrage in the second inning. Brigham Young must now meet the winner of the southern division, Arizona State, to decide the conference champion. The Sun Devils have won the championship three times in the WAC's six year history. Last year was the first time the championship has gone to a northern division team, as Arizona won the remaining two playoffs. The 1969 champion will be decided Friday and Saturday in Tempe. Ariz. In a double header Friday, the Rams took the opener, 2-1, while Utah came back to salvage the nightcap, 5-0. A bases loaded balk by Dan Prock scored the winning run for CSU in the first game. Dick Hardy pitched a three hitter for the Utes in the second tilt and helped himself with a home run in the seventh inning. Lose First Game The Redskins dropped Saturday's single contest, 8-5, though outhitting the Rams 13 to eight. CSU catcher Daryl Southwick provided the big blow of the game when he cracked a grand slam home run in the second inning. The Rams scored seven of their eight runs in the inning. All of Utah's safties were singles. By winning two of the three games, Colorado State remained in sole possession of third place and finished with a 9-9 WAC record. Utah needed two victories to tie for third and ended the conference season with a 7-11 mark. The Utes' overall record is 20-22. In the top half of the northern division, Brigham Young, who won the conference championship for the first time last year, hung on to its division lead by winning the final game of a three-game set |
