Show SDS kept its cool Last Tuesday, evening, Jim Bever of the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) appeared on KSXX radio's talk program. The program format was designed to allow the commentator and radio listeners the opportunity to ask Mr. Bever pertinent questions about Utah's SDS. The fact that those who called Mr. Bever had little or no ability or interest in conducting a quiet and relevant discourse with him is a sad commentary on the local critics of SDS. Verbally harassed from nearly every caller, Mr. Bever must be complimented on the calm and controlled manner with which he conducted himself. Calling him everything from a "punk" to a "communist," Salt Lake area citizens were more interested in carrying on an emotional display of hate than in questioning Mr. Bever's beliefs and knowledge. The conduct of Mr. Bever and SDS on this campus has been indicative of nothing more than relevant and reasoned concern over the screaming problems of our campus and world. In view of the loose knit structure of SDS, Mr. Bever and his fellow SDSers can logically only be held responsible for their own actions and not for those of members at Berkeley, Columbia, or elsewhere. The Chronicle finds it difficult to follow the reasoning which led KSXX listeners to accuse Mr. Bever of a type of behavior he has never exhibited here, while they themselves acted in a manner so lacking in sagacity and relevancy that they destroyed any argument they might have had. Mr. Bever must be commended for the reasoned and calm responses he tried to get through the barrage. His listeners displayed something much less praiseworthy. |
