Show ( HRONICLE , i ED1TO RI Ai J mi, ii . -ii n - r"'' i,-"-; irr-i-w""111''1' The Chronicle, once again, wishes to commend i studentbody officers for taking time to get information before making a decision. It is mandatory for elected representatives of the studentbody to be sufficiently informed before they take a stand on an issue. At the same time, the Chronicle, once again, wonders why student government officers who actively sought their offices, and one would presume the responsibilities of their offices, are consistently uninformed on issues of vital concern to their constituents, and thus delay necessary action in order to get information. After attending every meeting fall quarter of the Executive Council of the Associated Students of the University of Utah (ASUU), it is apparent that many items are deferred in order for Council members to inform j themselves of basic facts which they, as elected j representatives and officers, should already know. Why did ' these people run if they know so little about so many areas j of student concern? And how is the studentbody hurt by having officers who are rarely able to make recommendations without setting up subcommittees as information task forces, scheduling meetim time to hear administrative officials explain a problem which they have already explained at three open meetings? These are the questions the Chronicle raises, not ones of taking action for action's sake without sufficent information. Admittedly, all officers cannot be well informed on every minute phase of campus life, but the Chronicle does believe it is fair to question the Council when a majority are, by their own statements and votes, not informed I enough to commit themselves on several important issues when the opportunity to be so informed has been present. What have they been doing? It is, afterall, part of their job to inform themselves in order to make decisions and this should not always mean setting up information sub committees after a problem has been called to their attention by petitions and guest speakers. Anyone who has been on this campus two to three years and who has expressed enough interest in student welfare to run for a studentbody office should also be competent to make decisions without unnecessary delay in order to inform himself of the basic problem. . But do student government officers have this interest, and do they now have the committment to put themselves out a little bit in order to understand what is happening on campus? Further council work, not talk or lip-service, will tell. i Students, faculty, administration, alumni as well as non-members of the University community are invited to write letters to the editor. Letters should not exceed five inches or 250 words, and, of course, will not be printed if libelous. If a person has a point of view that he feels cannot be explained in i 250 words, he may make arrangements to write a ! column by contacting Nazir Khan in the Chronicle, Union 160, between 3 and 5 p.m. Sunday through Thursday. Columns are the opinions of the author and do not necessarily reflect the policy of the Chronicle, faculty, administration or studentbody. Published daily during the fall, winter and spring quarters, except during test i by the Associated Students of the University of Utah. Second class postace paid in the Post Office at Salt Lake City, Utah ' I he opinions expressed on the editorial pages of The Daily Utah Chronicle do not necessarily represent the view of the studentbody or the University ulrrnnistration.
