Show VMH Review Hero ray's Dy Suirp rises Crowd: By. Ed Ditterline Four days last week were really big for Valley Music Hall, as Jack Benny, the world famous "39-year-old" violin playing comedian, com-edian, entertained responsive audiences. au-diences. Benny, who has managed man-aged to stay on top all these years in show business gave the people of the Salt Lake area a taste of comedy which few people peo-ple have had. His jokes were hilarious, the biggest surprises of the evening were two of his traveling companions, com-panions, Frankie Fanelli, h i s featured singer, and Doris Dodge, an 11-year-old girl who amazed the audience with the proficiency with which she played the violin. Farelli Great Fanelli, who received his first job in show business at Max-field's Max-field's Lodge, in Salt Lake, could not possibly be described any other way than great. He sang his songs with a sincerity which makes him almost unique in the entertainment world. Although Fanelli is very new his talent is such that he will be assured of magnificent success, that is, if his manager leaves him alone. Fanelli is a self seller, and his personality will no doubt impress im-press the audiences of the younger young-er generation as well as appeal to the old timers. Fanelli sang songs' which have been featured by the top entertainers and groups all over the United States. His most popular selections included in-cluded "Born Free," the recent academy award winner, and "Exodus", which he sang with a great deal of emotion. When Benny shares his spot- . light with an 11-year-old girl, it would ordinarily be surprising, surpris-ing, but when Benny brought Doris Dodge on stage for their number together, the audience fell in love with her and her violin vio-lin playing immediately. Doris, ' who is a thm Iblonde with an electric smile, spoke to the audience au-dience with a confidence that was amazing. When asked if she was ever scared on stage, Doris replied, without hesitation, "No, I like it very much." It seems that Doris came into the show when Benny's Ben-ny's former duet partner outgrew out-grew her part. |
