Show EH.! a The motorists on the streets of Milford are perplexed by the condition the so-called "big wigs" of the town have created sinro the recent snow storm. The snow ridges in the center of ujj ;.i.-ets iu lo as nazaiu-ous nazaiu-ous a condition as ever existed in the entire history of the town. The "big city" ideas of the town board moving- the snow to the middle of the streets perhaps was a good idea if it had been followed up in a "big city" way by hauling the snow away in dump trucks as has been done in the past, thus eliminating the use o'f this snow as a playground for numerous chiidren and also a hazardous condition for the motorist and children alike. The motorist who uses the street meanwhile is lucky if he can get by the cars parked on the side of the street in the parking zones, without sideswiping such cars or without danger to his own machine. Oh, yes, maybe you didn't know it, but there is a traffic trap that exists on Standpipe Hill where the snow is pushed to the center of the street and goes down to the " Closed" sign where the kids of the town go sleigh riding. Bless their hearts, we love our children. chil-dren. But is it safe? No. You couldn't see the sign 10 feet away because the snow had it covered then. When you, Mr. or Mrs. Motorist, Motor-ist, get to thai point and see the sign it is too late because the trap is sprung and the motorist j has to violate the law and cross as safely as possible, even unwillingly, un-willingly, because he can't turn tii ir aitnlion, and that they I should make efforts to correct i their errors. ' Following are some of the er- rors The Milford News feels the' ( city council has made. Maybe we're worng, maybe we're ' i-iKht. j A complaint was filed against ' Fay Bradf eld for failure to I ;lean snow and or ice off his sidewalk within a reasonable time after the snowstorm was ovji'. We have no quarrel with Hint. If his sidewalk was not cleaned he should have been cited for not cleaning it. BUT, if the law is to be enforced it hould be enforced ;mpartially. Every other resident of Milford who failed to comply with the sidewalk-cleaning law should have received a citation along with Mr. Bradfield. The City Council erred, we believe, in having "Closed" street signs placed on "Sleigh Hill" within a few 'feet of the intersection. No motorist approaching ap-proaching that close can possibly pos-sibly turn their car, in this heavy snow, once they get on those side hills. The "closed" ugns should be placed at the intersections in-tersections A FULL BLOCK away from the sleigh hill. We have personally mentioned men-tioned this previously to city council members, but still the signs are placed at the intersections intersec-tions a few feet from the sleigh hill. Better still why close off that hill at all? Why not make the Library Park hill a coasting hill and allow motorists to use the "test hill" route, one of ONLY THREE through streets east-west, in the community? In Mrs. Bohart's case, we are j told she has a legitimate gripe on being riven a citation for crossing the coasting hill. It was the only way she could move her car, if our information informa-tion is correct. She had to cross the coasting lane to get to town from her home, and the city council in designating the .street a coasting lane gave permission per-mission for residents of that street to use that street, with caution, when traveling to and from their homes. Possibly the circumstances were not properly or clearly presented to Judge Koch. We don't know. We do know that Jud'e Koch is a fair-minded man and an able justice, who is influenced not one bit by friendship, pressure, or sentiment. senti-ment. But we would like to ooint out that the city council has no authority to reverse any uf his decisions the only reversal re-versal can come from the district dis-trict court. He is appointed by the council, but as a judge his decisions can only be reviewed by a higher court not by the city council. There are some pretty hard-headed hard-headed cuys on the city council, coun-cil, but they welcome suggestions sugges-tions for the betterment of our community, and are anxious to do a Kood j0b while they are in offcie. Let's talk over with lln-m our differences of opinion and, even when thye're wrong, let's give 'em A for Effort and do what we can to help them build for us a Better Milford. around as the snow is piled in the center of the street. If he backs up (or could back up) he or she would be backing up 'against the flow of traffic which I believe is unlawful too. You j v;olate the law unwillingly when you have to cross the said i street. You are given a ticket and have to see the judge within with-in three days, and against his better judgment he has to fine you, even if a friend flagged you across the street in an absolutely ab-solutely safe manner. You pay .the fine or go to jail. If you protest pro-test payment you have to pay it anyway and have to take it up with the town board, who created cre-ated the hazardous condition. After appealing to the town board, they think you are silly for complaining about your lawful law-ful rights; laugh at you and make a remark tha tyou ought to carry your scoop shovel I around to shovel out of your difficulties, which they've set up for you by their lax government. govern-ment. I guess they've spent all of their money on oiling the streets of the town to gain political glory while the citizens can dig their own way out of the snow. With the conditions the way they are, if another big snow comes soon, on top of this mess it would be chaos and you could walk or stay at home. P.S. Some of the conditions have been altered as this goes I to press. MRS. JACK BOHART. The Milford News agrees with Mrs. Bohart in that we feel there have been inequities and apparent laxity in administration, adminis-tration, particularly as regards snow removal, and traffic enforcement en-forcement or routing during the current heav snowfall. At the same time, we have i confidence in the present city administration, and have a great deal of admiration for the manner in which they are attempting at-tempting to achieve progress during their term of office, and work for a better, more desirable desir-able community in which to live. We feel the city council has "slipped" in more than one instance in-stance during this present un-precedent un-precedent heavy snow. But we 'feel their faults are unintentional unintention-al after all they are paid only $25 a month for their public labors and must earn a living at other endeavors. Operation of our city government is of necessity a "spare time" deal. In the 10 years we have lived in Milford we believe the present pres-ent city council is the most efficient, ef-ficient, most earnest, and most ambitious we have known. They are to be commended for their efforts. We don't think they should be censured or castigated for their errors, but we do believe their errors should be called to |
