Show TIGERS TO PLAY FILLMORE FRIDAY IN FIRST 1949 FOOTBALL CONTEST Milford sports fans will get a prevue of the 1949 football foot-ball Tigers and Coach Neal will get a look at his 1949 squad in action, when they entertain the Millard High pigskin toters from Fillmore Friday afternoon on the Tiger Turf. It will be a pre-season content, with no bearing on league results, but both the coaches, tutoring squads nevr to 11 -man football, will be more anxious spectators than the fans who howl and rave along the sidelines. Little is known about the Millard squad, except that this will be their first contest in 11-man 11-man football. The Milford Tigers .played a post-season 11-man 11-man , game with Hinckley last year, after the regular season had ended, but only five men on the '49 squad have had any experience at toting the leather. Herb Coon, Bob Crane, Doug Murphy, Clyde Turner and Howard How-ard Sherwood were members of the '48 six-man team, however, according to word received late Wednesday, Sherwood will not i compete this year. That leaves ' Coach Neal with four men who i might be termed veterans, and only 22 men for his total squad not enough candidates to field two full teams. Consequently, Milford Tiger backers are not anticipating a too-successful season, sea-son, but with only 3 seniors Gerald Stoker, Henry Schoo and Herb Coon on. the squad they are looking forward to better teams in the future. Tiger fans aren't "selling Milford Mil-ford shcxt," however, and hasten has-ten to point out that this is the first year of 11-man football for the entire league. They also, emphasize that Coach Perry Neal comes from Texas, a state where they take their football pretty serious, and "if the kids will listen to him" we may lose games the early part of the season, but we can expect the Tigers to bounce back later on and upset anybody's dope in the I late-season contests. Altho Coach Neal has announced an-nounced no starting lineup for Friday's contest, the kickoff squad probably will include Crane, Coon and Turner in the ) backfield, with Stoker almost a I sure starter back of the line. Coon may start at end. Davis or Hutchings will start at center, cen-ter, with Hutchings probably getting the nod because of his extra beef. Dick Bracken and Roland Fowles are certain to get into action in the backfield. Bracken and Fowles both have grown like weeds the past year, and both showed unusual spunk, tho comparative midgets, in their athletic endeavors last year. The '49 squad includes Brisco, Johnson, Mclntyre, and Rex at end, with Herb Coon listed as combination end and back. Brimberry and Myers will hold down the guard slots, with Clyde Turner as combination man, nlaying guard and backfield. At Tackle are Rich Fisher, Paul Rhodes, Henry Schoo and Milt Waite. Backfield men include Barnes, Bracken, Bradfield, Bob Crane, Fowles, Murphy, Scott, Stoker and Turner. Bob Wright, 140-pound junior, will see action in the line, probably at guard. Hutchings and Davis are the only candidates for the center position. With 11-man football new to the league, and most of the boys playing their first season of any form of football, the lineups for the first league contest next week against Beaver will probably prob-ably be pretty well juggled. |
