Show THE VALUE OF A COMMUNITY PAPER By Kent Myers Have you asked yourself, ' What does my local paper mean to me?" The local newspaper is the only printed document that is interested in the immediate area in which you live. The local newspaper gives us the news about the people and things we know. This newspaper gives us that knowledge we need to adapt ourselves to the changes in our surroundings. As the people change, the surrounding elements ele-ments progress; as public opinion opin-ion changes, there is always the need for some visible sign of these changes. The late President Roosevelt said, "The hometown newspaper is the fundamental unit of freedom free-dom to the community." This is proved by the use of the newspaper news-paper as an instrument of the public voice. Anyone can send information to the newspaper to be printed if it does not tear down the next fellow. It is the aim of the newspaper to bring to the public the pure facts. It is the gateway of our knowledge about others. The newspaper is a source of information infor-mation to all who care to read it. It deals with the nrnhlpmss nf I our town and gives suggestions on how we can solve these problems. prob-lems. We can value the newspaper not only as an instrument of the news, but also as a source of education. ed-ucation. Many people find that the newspaper is a very adequate source of reading enjoyment. The newspaper in a sense could be used as a guide to good, english. The paper is printed by those who have studied English a great deal, and have a very good choice of words. These facts summarize my idea of the value of a local ' newspaper. |
