Show Big Tmp Hike to try 4000 August 3 Annual Timpanogos Hike, largest community climb in America, has been set this year for August 2-3, it waa announced by Dr. Israel Heaton, chairman. Usually in previous years the event has been scheduled schedul-ed between the terms of Brigham Young University Summer School, about July 14-20, but for several years it has been delayed because of heavy snow pack on the trail. The activities begin with a program Friday evening starting at 8 p.m. in Aspen Grove, 17 miles up Provo Canyon. The BYU Summer School student body officers will prepare the program. Traditionally the legend of Timpanogos is portrayed in dance and drama. Officials expect 4,000 hikers, hik-ers, and past experience indicates indi-cates that 2,500 of those will reach the summit. Summit Sum-mit badges will be given to those who reach the top by the Provo Chamber of Commerce. Com-merce. Cash and photography merchandise awards amounting amount-ing to $50 will be given for the best pictures taken of Timpanogos and last year's hikers. Photographs will be judged in two areas, scenic and human interest, plus a sweepstakes winner. The Timpanogos Hike is sponsored annually by BYU with cooperation of Provo Chamber of Commerce, the Forest Service and civic leaders. |
