Show Are you a good user or abuser of electrical services in home? Are you a good user, or an abuser, of the electrical service in your home? Almost one out of every six dwelling fires is caused by misused or defective defec-tive electrical wiring and equipment, equip-ment, according to National Fire Protection Association studies. Check your answers to these questions, to see whether there are uncorrected electrical hazards haz-ards in your home: 1. Is the right size fuse (15 amps for lighting circuits) in each socket in the fuse box? Do you use a new fuse never nev-er substitutes after each blow? 2. Do you use extension cords within safe limits of their capacities? cap-acities? Safe limit for the most commonly used extension cord is 500 watts. If you must use an extension cord to feed one or more appliances drawing more power than this, make sure you use a heavy duty type. 3. Are extension cords and appliances cords replaced immediately im-mediately whenever insulation shows signs of fraying 0r cracking? Do you see that cords are never run under rugs or hooked over nails. 4. Are appliances checked periodically to be sure they are in good operating condition, and taken out of service for repair or replacement at the first sign of trouble? 5. Is your TV antenna installed in-stalled where it cannot fall across power lines, and is it quipped' with a properly grounded lighting arrestor? If there are an "no" answers on your list, take corrective measures immediately. |
