Show Hepatitis cases c&b; health measures urged The number of cases of in-fec in-fec t i o u s hepatitis reported from the southern end of Utah County has increased during the last two weeks, including at least one from Springville. But Dr. Elmo Eddington, the head of the County health department, de-partment, indicated there is no cause for great alarm. He urged residents of the area to exercise good personal sanitation. sanita-tion. The disease is caused by a virus and attacks the liver. It causes fever, nausea and abdominal ab-dominal discomfort. The virus has not been isolated, according accord-ing to Glen Sagers, a county sanitarian, but the disease is thought to be spread through personal contact, improper personal per-sonal hygiene, improper disposal dispos-al of waste products and possibly pos-sibly through the respiratory processes. Dr. Eddington said that there have been isolated cases reported for the last eight months but the number has risen recently. A total of about 23 cases have been reported. He indicated his department is conducting a full-scale investigation investi-gation of the matter to determine deter-mine the source of the infection infec-tion and will do all in its power pow-er to combat the disease. One factor that makes it hard to trace and combat is the fact that the incubation ranges from 10 to 40 days and can go even longer. |
