Show New 'Block Home' program a good idea, a sound solution "Block Home." It's a good idea. The Iron County Parent Teacher Association, the Iron County School Distict and the Iron County Sheriff's Department are to be commended com-mended for organizing such an effort (see story on page A4). The parents and families involved are to be thanked for participating. What it all boils down to is a concern for children, a concern that nearly everyone shares, and yet, for some reason, sometimes, we don't know quite what to do. "Block Watch" has given us that something to do, that possible solution to any problems that could happen in our community to our children. In the past few months there has been quite a disturbance around the county concerning abductions ab-ductions and attempted abductions and rumored abductions of children. There has also, as usual, been pointed out that there is quite a dog problem in some areas. And then there are the numerous childhood problems of bullies, illness or accident all very real to children. "Block Watch" provides the help that the children need in all these situations, and more. Very simply, the program consists of two to four homes on each block displaying a bright green sign in their windows with the word 'Block' enclosed in a house. These signs announce to all children that the house is an approved sanctuary for children in distress. The children will be informed and will know what the signs mean. Teachers in the county will have a sign in their rooms and will periodically discuss the programs throughout the year. The people participating par-ticipating in the "Block Watch" program will be trained as to what to do in any given situation. The program is a prime example of what can be done when concerned individuals and groups work together for the betterment of all, using the resources of the schools and the law enforcement agencies. All to often, everybody wants to do something, somewhere the resources are available, and many times somebody even has a good idea; yet, the desire, the resources and the idea never quite get together. This time they did, and everybody involved is to be commended for making Iron County a better place, for all of us, and especially for our children. |
