Show Beaver track prospects bright; could have trouble repeating BEAVER A number of returning athletes who placed well in the state 1-A championships last year make the track picture at Beaver High School optimistic for both the boys' and girls' programs. Girls Outlook: Coach Alan Raddon figures his girls' team will be stronger than last year's squad which placed fifth in the state meet. The major reason for his optimism op-timism is additional returning experience ex-perience has has this year that he didn't have last year. Teresa Edwards, a junior won the state 800-meter and was second in the 1-A 1-A mile last year; Darlene Bettridge recorded a third in the discus; while Camille Lee and Nola Spencer picked up fourth places in the two-mile and shot respectively. Bettridge, Lee and Spencer are all seniors this year. Also back this season after scoring in the.1981 state meet are Cyd Marshall, a senior long jumper, and Nanette Black, a junior who placed in the 300 hurdles. Marshall picked up a fifth place, while Black . finished sixth. In addition to the returning veterans, Raddon is looking for points from Marshall and Nancy Bradshaw when they join with Edwards in the medley relay. The fourth member of that team could come from any of several girls. Sophomore Wendy Smith placed in the region meet last year in the long jump and is expected to do better this year. "We also have several good sprinters The outlook is bright for Cedar High School tracksters. Middle row (left to right) are Darrin Condie, Bruce Hall, Brett Jolley, Rick Thomas, Dirk Bohne, Andy Parry, John Bishop and Andy Morrell, Back row (left to right) are coach Robert Cox, Ted Jessop, Mike Garfield, Troy Nielson, Danny Harris, Rick Lunt, K.C. After we have some time to sort things out on the track, we expect to do well this year." Raddon figures that North Sevier, last year's 1-A women's champion, will be strong again this year. He also looks for Panguitch to be tough and for Parowan to have some very good individual in-dividual performers. Boys Outlook: Coach Calvin Albrecht will be attempting at-tempting to bring the Beaver boys' team its third consecutive state championship. Although Albrecht is not negative, he figures that he will have a hard time repeating. "But we'll be right there in the middle of the fight for the state title," he says. "We have some good solid kids out, and we expect to be plenty tough again," Albrecht predicts. Chris Davis, a senior, is the defending state champion in the 800 meters. He will also help the Beavers in the open mile and 4 x 400 relay events. "Chris is very determined. He has run all winter, and he wants the state record in the 800," Albrecht said. Sophomore David Roberts finished second in the mile and fifth in the two-mile two-mile at last year's state meet. The other returning state finishers are Thane Marshall, a sophomore, who finished third in the 300 hurdles, and senior sprinter Scott, Yardley, who placed in both the 100 and 200. "We are doing a lot of experimenting," ex-perimenting," Albrecht explained. "We may not use people in the same events where they placed last year. It just depends on how we think we can get the most team points." Other Beavers who should win points include sophomore Steve Hutchings in the relays, javelin and 100 and Eric Dotson, a sophomore, in the sprints and the discus. |
