Utah's representatives must stand together, this time, or we can't expect legislators from other states to rally with us against MX." Holmes was referring to an incident, in May 1980, which involved Representative Hansen's predecessor, Gunn McKay. During consideration con-sideration of the so-called "Simon Amendment" to withhold MX basing funds, McKay argued against Congressman Marriott's position, and in favor of the Air Force's Great Basin MX plan. Some observers felt that the Simon Amendment was helped to defeat by a divided Utah delegation. Holmes explained that the bill now awaiting House action, H.R. 3455, is the Military Construction Con-struction Authorization for Final 1982. He said that it specifically authorizes $356 million for construction associated with the MX. "The Air Force still plans to start building MX support facilities in the Great Basin next year," Holmes said, adding that "we don't have much time left to stop them." Utah representatives Dan Marriott and Jim Hansen will have an opportunity to vote on the Air Force MX program this week, according to a spokesman for the Salt Lake City-based MX Information Coalition.
